It couldn't possibly be just that more people are realising they get a bang out of shooting, could it?

Yes they read AR Forums and see what a buzz it is. Note this below in the article, its actually what we (legits) have been saying for years. " commander of the Firearms Squad, said that an increase of 37,000 gun licences in NSW since 2010 was a lot but there has been no corresponding increase in gun crime. “If you are a legitimate gun licence holder you are probably doing everything right,” he said." The rise in gun ownership in the US is also showing up in a huge increase in concealed carry licenses (and no license required States) Concealed handgun permits in US at new record Blacks, Women Lead Growth Published July 20, 2017 Fox News Concealed handgun permits in the United States soared by 1.83 million since last July, setting a record for the fourth consecutive year, according to an analysis released Thursday. That brings the total number of concealed handgun permit holders in the country to 16.3 million, with some of the biggest increases occurring among women and African-Americans, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) said. Concealed handgun permits are now held by some more than 6 percent of American adults, the CPRC analysis found. Outside the restrictive states of California and New York, that figure rises to about 8 percent. Concealed handgun permit holders are extremely law abiding, the analysis shows. The percent of permit holders who are charged or convicted of a felony has fallen: In 2015 it was 0.0123; in 2016 the percent was 0.0092 percent. “In Florida and Texas, permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at one-sixth of the rate at which police officers are convicted,” the CPRC said in a statement. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017...men-lead-growth.html Here's John Lott Jr.'s (Crime Prevention Research Center) report on CCWs http://www.crimeresearch.org/w...he-United-States.pdf Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. No matter what happens, it's the American's fault. Personal freedom envy ? Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. Article is full of hooey! Should be: Credit the US gun culture not blame! Hell, 2.3 guns average? I'm not into it very strong and have around 40. Where is the logic that: a gun owner CAN'T break the law?? Man I'm glad I don't live in such a fk'd up country! No wonder so many vermin are over running the place. And at the same time homicide rates are at a record low. In fact in both the US and Australia homicide rates have been declining steadily since about 1991, and are less than half now (on a per capita basis) what they were then. In Australia the decline started well before the buyback, and the rate of decline was entirely unaffected by buybacks and by the subsequent increases in legal firearms ownership over more recent years. Even more interestingly, the rate of decline in homicide rates was bettered by that in the US, without bans or buybacks but rather with the rolling-out across the country of more liberal laws relating to ownership and carriage of firearms.

That is a rather old article, and the numbers are higher now. There are a good number in NSW who own far more than 40 firearms too. Some individuals own hundreds.
It isn't so much that gun owners can't, but study after study from criminologists shows that licenced firearms owners are very unlikely to commit offences. Rates of representation of licenced firearms owners in such crimes as homicide are close to zero.
