What do you think of that combo for sambar out too 200yds? here are some specs: muzzle:2320/3950 taylorKOvalue = 45 100yd:2200/3570 . ........TKO....... = 43 200yd:2080/3160 ...........TKO.......= 40 That 330gn pill is longer than a 450 woodleigh, has BC of .545 and we can achieve that 2320 velocity in a .416/350remMag(.416express) due to the GSC-HV design and loadlength of 3" in a SAm70 CRFaction. Recoil: 9lb rifle..35 8.5lb.....:37 8lb........:40 338win 250barnesX,2700fps muzzle... @200yds:2336/3029, TKO=28 recoil@9lb 35 375H*H 300barnesX,2500fps muzzle... @200yds:2192/3200, TKO=35 recoil@9lb 40

The GS-HV bullet is designed to be a long range projectile at high velocity. For sambar or any brush hunting I think a heavy for calibre round nose would be far better.

Nitrox, Yes the GSCHV is designed for LRHV,but that does not mean they are inferior to other pills at short range or reduced velocities. But it does mean that they are superior to more traditional pills at longer ranges. My train of thought was that the .416,330Hv@2320 would be more than acceptable for any close heavy brush work, i'm sure, plus have it all over any traditional RN SPs', should on occasion,a longer distance shot arise. At the 200yd velocity of 2080,the GSCHV still exhibit very good vel/energy/expansion to be very effective. The GSCustom website shows expanded .375/265Hv pills at impact velocity around the 2080fps mark(same as the 330Hv@200yds), they look good. Have a look,B&W image in bottom right corner: http://gsgroup.co.za/02hv.html

I have looked at the GS bullets before and drooled a little over the HV lighter weight ones. They are expensive though and who knows if we can get them in via Aust Post at the moment or future?

Woodjack I'm interested in getting some of these bullets where are you getting them from? With a 330 grn bullet I should be able to get 3000fps

I might be interested in getting some GS-HV projectiles as well. Are all the distribution and timely supply issues now under control?

Woodjack, That combo sounds like it might do the job. But then again the 150gr Power Point from my 308 did a fine job as well last May. It might not be the combination I always use, but it worked then and I'm sure it will work again in the future. - stu

The woodleigh 340 gr protected points might be easier to obtain as far as a lighter .416 bullet goes. I wonder how the Aussie mad Taipan 400 gr .416 bullets would go on Sambar anyone used them on bigger stuff??

PC, I've shot 1 Sambar and a few pigs using Taipan 300 gr RN out of my .375 All dropped instantly. Not much meat damage on the pigs. The Sambar was a shoulder shot. Totally ruined the meat on the opposite shoulder and left a hole big enough to fit my fist into. Too soft....but very accurate out of my rifle.

Safari, I have used the Taipan .416 400 gr bullet on ferals and it worked great as it did expand a bit so seems as though we came to the sam conclusion..................I just wondered about bigger stuff as I had never used them on big stuff. When I take the .416 for big game it will need to be the woodleigh 410 gr I think !!
