I hunted with Mark from Rangini hunting in April of this year and shot a 9 pointer and will be hunting Tahr and Chamois with him later this year.The lodge would be about 3 hours drive south of Auckland.He does post on AR forum,here is his website is http://www.bigskynz.com

So why do you think the asker of the original question was kidding ? It is a fairly common occurrance for Northern hemisphere hunters to come and hunt in NZ anyway.Just curious about why you should see it your way ...

Yes, I too was wondering about David's comments as free range hunting is available in both Oz and NZ. In fact, I would venture a guess that we have more free range hunting than just about anywhere. All of the deer hunting that I have done is free-range and has included sambar, fallow and hog deer in Victoria, Rusa in NSW, Red deer in Queensland and NZ and Whitetail on Stewart Island.

Muzza when I looked in to a stag hunt down in NZ there was no free hunts.Heck they were all $6000 and $7000 and some were more.There was nothing free.I am not trying to bash any one.

A bit of language confusion:

Free Range Hunt= wild unpenned critters, as in free range chickens vs caged eggmakers. Free Range is not farm-raised captive fenced-in or otherwise confined by other than natural barriers.

Free Range Hunt does not mean no cost for guided hunt.

nothing is free in this world , but "free-range" means going out into the hills and mountains were there arent any fences , as opposed to the fish-in-a-barrell' enclosure hunt .
We can supply both types , most locals dont go for the enclosure hunts , but some overseas guys with poor fitness , short time , and lotsa cash seem to like hunting in enclosures.
You can do a free-range hunt cheaper than the prices quoted , come over and hunt on your own or with a local, not a pro guide. Your success rate may be better with a guide , but you get to pay for all the costs too, hence the figures quoted .

I would think it would be possible to do a "free" hunt as well.

Be your own guide, bring your own gear, book your own huts and/or blocks, do your own cooking, do your own scouting, skinning, caping, driving, etc.

Won't be free as there are always costs.

But if you have enough time I don't think it is illegal to do your own hunting. I think it is possible to hunt unguided but you will need to be personally licenced for firearms etc. And get whatever hunting permit is required but these are usually just a formality.

May not have as much success unless you have lots of time.

Lots of Aussies still head over to NZ and hunt unguided. Used to be the ONLY way to do it.

In Aust it may be harder as much hunting is on private land but sambar are in the hills on accessible land.

Don't get lost in the mountains of either country however, something a guide is good for.

try the http://www.fishnhunt site hunting forums, the guys there should be able to help. All national parks and consevation land is huntable free of charge, you need to get a tourist gun permit which the NZ consulate in the US should be able to get for you, then a bit of local knowledge and you should be right. When are you thinking of because the winter months aren't the best, spring is a good time and then March April for the roar.
