Personally, its been a bad year all-round ... Sanity has been maintained with the air-rifle which has taken a number of starlings and sparrows. A few young foxes may meet their maker this week-end, and then there's the bloody cats. Otherwise its load development with the new 358Win preparing for next year.
Cheers...

I have been back 2 weeks from my usual couple of weeks in Cape York after hogs.
We were later than usual by a full month due to one of the group's work committments.
All agreed that we were not going north again in October with 46C and high humidity.
Just escaped the probable beginning of an early wet as the place had 70mm a week after we left.
Shot about our usual number of pigs with much less water around by then.
Many of the water holes or swamps with remaining moisture saw pigs in the middle of the day.
It was physically too hot to hunt through the middle of the day and we usually sought out a waterhole during the middle of the day 10.30-3.30pm and sat it out in the downwind shady side. We have noted a 7C temperature difference between the upwind and downwind sides of a waterhole. Spent this period ambushing the hole and watching crocs and birdlife.
There were some exciting walks amongst chest high grass beside permanent water with one particular hole yielding 9 pigs within 400yds.
Went back there as a "dinner camp" several hours later and shot another 4 off same hole.
A general comment this year was that the boars were in the best condition ever seen. The fattest boars across the board ever. Many of these boars were in excess of 100kg and very solid. No decent tusks though and in direct contrast the family groups were generally in the usual poor condition.

Muzza, let's see, this month so far. 3 x Fallow, a few hares, some foxes (got to keep the farmers happy!), and a Pheasant shoot last friday.
Life just keeps coming at you, doesn't it?

Cheers, Dave.

Things will be slowing down here soon due to the wet. I did go out a a few weeks ago and got a couple of pigs. I have some pic and will post them when they are developed. Other than that its quiet up here. I will be getting stuck into the fish when I get to Darwin clap

Other than a couple NT trips a variety of small critters - rabbits, hares, a few foxes. The young foxes are out hunting now, so will be fair game. Also galah shooting this week. We have cut half our hay crops and we get from dozens to hundreds of galahs on the grain (they can be legally shot in SA as crop protection).

Broke my left wrist in two places a few weeks ago, which has limited the shooting a bit. The hand strength is down by 90% of the strength of the right one, which results in having to raise my left arm and shoot with the 22lr rifle resting on my left forearm. It aint pretty but I'm getting there. The physio-torturist has advise that I don't shoot the full bore yet.

Over the last two nights I've managed to knock over a few rabbits and there are three dead magpies on the house paddock.
Things aint too bad. Smiler

Thanks guys .

We seemed to be lost out there for a while - no hunting stories or pictures so I thought a reminder of why we are here was needed.

I have shot some goats and some feral dogs recently but other than that life is quiet.

I have made a "small boy rifle" for the small boy in the family - cut down a Remington Targetmaster singleshot .22 so that it fits a six year old. Just meets the legal length requirements , and all that remains is making a new buttplate from aluminium. Probably take as long as the rest of the job did . Now the monster child will be able to hunt bunnies for himself instead of trying to use a too-big rifle.

I have to do the same for my boys. I bought a stirling .22 that I'll take a saw to.

What a boring bunch, all talking about how quiet life is, make it happen guys!!!!!!!
Muzza that's a scarey thought to have that young fella behind a gun.

Cleaned up a few hares, including a whole family all at once with the hay mower.

Shot 12 Red Deer yesterday, all with .22 Rimfire and all heart shots. (Couldn't head shoot them as we were collecting brain samples to make sure there was no CWD about. .22 surprisingly effective: All one shot kills.)
Nothing special about the ammo/gun, just those winchester power point things and a Ruger 10/22.
But I guess that doesn't count as hunting.

Got one silly bugger of a Red Stag, that is roaring at the moment (In velvet) Full on roars.

Got a mob of over 300 magpies that need a curry up. They seem to be ganging up big time for some reason.
Saw a nice big stag in velvet while out doing a bit of fencing on the back boundary on monday, he'll keep for the roar.

Watched a Piere David Stag roaring and rutting.
Will go back today with the video.
They have a totally different breeding cycle to all the other deer species in NZ

Going Tahr hunting next week with a couple of mates from Nelson.

But otherwise it's very quiet.

Be thankfull you have girls Tim....

We dont all live on a deerfarm like Tim does , nor do we have an alpine range on our doorstep like Tim does , not have access to the places that Tim does (I'm starting to go off Tim a lot actually...) But we still can go hunting things and tell others about it .

Was getting awfull boring here for a while with no stories or pics on real hunting... Frowner

I'm not in Australia these days but I shot a 150 lb porker here in Texas that got barbequed the same day a few weeks ago...

And today someone showed up here and when he saw the .22 cal. handgun I was packing he informed me how nobody can shoot a handgun...so from about 20 yards I proceeded to shoot a leaf...and he laughed because the leaf was still hanging. He shut up real fast when he saw the three bullet holes in the leaf...

Haven't shot anything else lately that I can remember.

Warren Plum and son are down this way around the 28th and we'll go try for a Tahr or two. Will keep you posted. As for the Mirfins I'm not sure if they're also in the party. No doubt Warren and Stuart are mates from way back.

Went spotlighting last night and my friend and I got four foxes....................well we got three and my stag pup got his first fox just a pup though, he caught it and did not know what to do with it at first so I went and got the tail and got him worked up enough and he shook and crunched it to death.

pissersI did shoot very poorly however.....................five pup foxes looking at me over a rock pile 120 yards away and had four shots with them with my .22 hornet and missed all four shots, might have had 5 shots. one of those nights, I just shot like a dog.

Gryphon1, i have been chasing sambar from interstate, sydney, for 15 years without bagging a trophy stag. I only got down to Vic 1-2 time a year, but finally my desire for a trophy Sambar got the better of me and i changed jobs, moved the whole family down here, and i try to get out at least once a month. (i moved to Melb in July this year). So my point is although my african trophy's are special to me, particularly the Buff, i'd trade most of them for a hard won Sambar stag any day. Now that i can put some time into them I'm sure one is not too far away. (here's hopeing anyway).

Well it finialy cooled off and I tried every week-end to get out, but something always came up! ( you know how that story goes ).
This Friday I had to work but I was determined to give it a try, since I promised my kids some jerky for Christmas! Left the house at 4:30 AM Sat. (yes that's AM) and drove 92 miles to the ranch and was sitting in my blind by 6:30! It was supposed to be warm again, and there was a little fog around, I could see some movent in the brush and knew it was deer, but couldn't see for sure. I was straining to get a look at them at about 80 yds away, when a doe walks out not 30 yds from me! All she would show me was the classic "Texas Heart Shot", so I just watched her move off and join the other two "things" in the brush. The fog was lifting and the sun was getting better, when this 6 pointer came to join our little party! They all mulled around a bit and the buck finialy showed himself!
BANG! PLOP! Down he goes! My favorit Ruger#3 does it again!
Turns out he had 4 points on one side and 2 on the other!

Looks like the kids get some jerky after all! Big Grin

Shovel ready.....
but hangin' on
