Hi Ya'll Back in August we spent 14 days hunting with Lynn Thompson (Cold Steel Inc) and Tim Wells (Relentless Pursuit TV), trying to kill buffalo with Lynn's Cold Steel samburu spears, among other weapons. The youtube clip below was of a young buffalo bull that Lynn and guide Peter Harding were trying to kill and the ensuing charge captured on film. Quite exciting!! Lynn has his own 'unique' style too, which we have all come to know and love!! Enjoy!! http://youtu.be/FKI1xmtf5Ck http://youtu.be/FKI1xmtf5Ck A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

He is rather quick with a handgun Looks like fun "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Sir Winston Churchill

Not a spear hunt then ! Should have had an extra spear in that holster or at least one of his knives ! Masai would have some laughs about this.

I've been waiting to see how this was going to turn out.

I will post some more thought later when I get a chance.... remember that this is a 2-minute clip about a handgun kill that happened on a 14-day spear and 'other weapons' hunt. The main purpose of the hunt was to try and kill one with the spear and to show what is possible with close stalking and edged weapons. Of course this is one that went wrong!! ... and then right again.... A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

he did have other spears, youjust cant see them in the clip. He went for the handgun rather than 2nd spear when the buff charged... I think that was a resonable thing to do. most commonsense thing to do when the buff is only 6' or so from you , not time to do anything much else. even if he planted a second spear at his feet & let the bull complete the charge to impale itself on the spear he would have worn those horns bigtime. mighty fast reflexes for a big man. He must get his trousers custom made to cover balls the size he has. Kudos & Respect sir.

I'm not sure he had much chance of success whether that spear hit the horn or not. It looks like the bull was quartering towards him when he made his toss....not an ideal angle for a pointy stick. He still gets credit for trying though.

Not that this video or thread is really about the spear throw itself.... the deal with that spear is that it will penetrate at ANY angle.... you just have to thread it through the chest cavity. They are so much more than a pointy stick. They are a very long, thin and heavy projectile with a razor sharp double edged dagger stuck to the end of it - they are devastating when they hit the spot!! It IS possible to get a deflection and that would be a consideration on this one - but the choice was made I guess and the spear was thrown at that time and place!! You could tell the spear throw was actually good by the reaction on LTC's face - you can tell when he throws badly... trust me you can!! Fair enough....that would be impressive to see! now I will have to search u-tube to find someone putting a spear through the chest of a buff

Very impressive! I have shot lots of 454 and I don't think I could even fan fire mine that fast. Any idea what load he was using? I am guessing CNS 1st shot as the buff went down immediately. Hornady XTP factory ammo mate!! yes sir the first shot caught him in the back of the head, just behind the horn line, dead center... the projectile tore his skull to pieces, so much so that when we boiled it (we did not know that it was fractured badly) the skull fell apart... The idiot should have let his ego kill the Buff when he screwed up on his throw. Edged weapon hunts "aren't" when you have to rely on a hand cannon as backup. Best thing about this hunt is that the guides got paid, nothing else. Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

I don't think the throw was screwed up Roni! Have you any experience with spears? Animals, especially dangerous ones can and will do the most unpredictable things. I believe had the buff not raised its head the spear would have pierced the spine and d.i.d. buff. Always nice to have and be able to use a backup. that is funny Ron - what you were looking at was 2.5 minutes of a 14 day hunt!!! The point of posting the video was not about the spear hunt but about the charge!! A day spent in the bush is a day added to your life Hunt Australia - Website Hunt Australia - Facebook Hunt Australia - TV

Matt: Now if Lynn would just cast his spear from a woomera (sp?) style atlatl, he wouldn't have to get nearly so dang close. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

That was cool! That buff was actually trying to get a piece of him. He shucked that pistol pretty quick, but then I guess he had a good incentive. DRSS

As soon as he threw the spear the buffalo came for him and the buff was giving that little sideways head threat posture that all bovines give(cattle too) when they don't won't you to come any closer. In other words, getting any closer or making a sudden move(spear throwing) was going to get an instant bad reaction from the buff.

P.S. A well planed stalk always includes the ever present termite monumemt-mound; the buff couldn't come straight at him and thus he had time to get the gun up. He owes the termites a big thanks.

kind-of... I wouldnt say they are every present... the main thing about using the mound in that situation was not so much about concealing the stalk but concealing the spear throw. The mistake made was that Lynn moved to much above the mound at the wrong time and the buff saw the motion. That was always going to be our problem with the spear throwing... not letting the animal see the motion - they are just too fast... Yeah he is working on a suitable atlatl - but that spear wont really work with one without a serious redesign.
