We take them on sight at any time as they are ruthless stock predators. I went up into a long gully several morning`s ago at a neighbours place 10 k`s down the road from home. I parked about one k up behind the house and My Dog and I set off and not long after I spotted a Sambar hind that was a candidate for the neighbours freezer but the hind had a nice calf of 100 lbs in tow so the rifle was forgotten about. She honked as i moved off which ****ed me off (warning others) but we kept going up the gully for several hundred yards and Dog`s nose showed that another was up front...somewhere.....Eventually I spotted the deer feeding and set my tripod up in the hope of taking some video and then for only one reason it too honked and bolted . One wind swirl was enough. I gave up on that direction and cut up a dry spur climbing the contour for 4-500 yards and then Dog almost shit himself in excitement...whoa rifle ready and slowly climbing I saw not a deer but a ferkin DOG cross my path ahead 40 yards......FUCK! I wasnt prepared for that one and was rather annoyed with myself. Dog followed the trail and I let him go seeing him intermittently through the dry side scrub then after some time I heard a ferocious barking ahead and well down below." Right this will take some getting to" I mused but kept stepping down hill in the direction of the next lot of barking. I knew it was a bitch simply because a dog would be doing the dog meets dog ritual with out barking. The thought was she may even have pups also. Then another round of "attack barking" drew my eye to Dog 50-60 yards below and further movement showed the other below him to his left. It was black with tan points and she was actually coming uphill towards my dog. I shouldered Mr Seven and gave her a squeal that stopped her to look up to me. The bullet smacked her front on as she stopped, dead right there but thrown downhill somewhat. OH YES! That`s an $120 bounty accompanied by the feel good moment of "walking one up" especially as I haven't trapped one since the cannibalised bitch and its pretty rare to shoot a bush dog.....chuffed is the word. She had grey hairs in her muzzle and had previously whelped but quite some time ago as she was as dry as a witches tit. Scalped and in the freezer and a beer for my troubles,a great morn`s walk. A riveting account. I enjoyed reading it. Didn't know you could claim a bounty on dog scalps. I wouldn't sneeze at that payment. How many would you catch in a year ? Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

They are tough going as they have been pursued for ever and they learn about traps too.I started trapping two years ago and when I cash the latest scalps the tally will be 22 dogs. All but the latest bitch came from this one property. They are frigging scarce now ha ha although when doing the trap rounds this morning I noticed the ribs on a deer bait, whole front end had been chewed..that is not eagles or crows work. I`m going back and redeploy a camera to see whats chewing. I had a gold month earlier this year for six dogs trapped then only a couple in the months after that. Hell of a deal. I thought dingo's were the dog problem over there. How many species of wild dogs are there in your area? Good read, thanks for sharing. Learned a couple things for a change. The wild dogs here are Dingo hybrids George and DNA shows that they are up to 70% Dingo. Most of the ones I have knocked off are the yellow/orange dingo colour. Posts: 87 | Location: Victoria Australia | Registered: 07 September 2002

Its how we feel about cats over here. Had a young backpacker from europe staying a while back. She was up at my parents house and she says looking out the window- Oh look a cat-- Then preceded to go pale as the old man raced out of the room and came back with a shotgun and cleaned it out from the living room.

Even in the U.S. coyotes who all look like they are genetically pure are said to be about 10% domestic dog.

Thanks Gryph: Neighbor has had a orange dingo for years. Along with a blue healer. Both very well behaved. Let's 'em loose in the open yard, they stay close to home and don't bother anyone. It's all in the training. Only one I've ever seen. Beats hell out of the $2 a head I got for prairie dogs. Rebuilt a rifle with the check. $420 back in '99. Trapping is a lot more effective then shooting as they work 24/7. My favorite trapping was for canines fox and coyotes. No wild dogs around here. Plenty of wolves but sadly no season on them

Knew a guy who spied a stray cat sneaking round the corner of the woolshed . Nipped inside , grabbed the 243 , snotted the kitty - bits of cat and multiple kittens everywhere . Momma kitty was on the verge of dropping all those bundles of joy - mate sped the process up somewhat. ________________________ Old enough to know better
