OK,here is a picture. On the left is a 6mm/222Rimmed,middle is the 28/30 Stevens(7mm),right is the 256 Win Mag. I have form dies for .256 and I know where there is one brand new .256WM reamer in Brissie. As to rebarreling a Martini to 17HMR,why bother? For around $450 and a week to get a PTA you could be shooting a brand new s/s repeater Savage.Comes with weaver style bases.I did this last year, weights less than 7lb. If you still want a single shot, order a Savage Favorite. They are now been made in 17HMR,lots of choices these days.HTH 17 HMR Favorite is now available in a take-down.

Thanks guys, there is certainly plenty to think of in those posts. I am pretty much set on the .17HMR for the small action, my other preference for that would be a match chambered heavy barreled .22RF. Both the .256 Win Mag (was just reading about this one on a website) and the 5.6x50R (performance equivalent to .22PPC if I am thinking of the right cartridge) are good possibilities I think. .28/30 Stevens - just wondering if this is based on the .30/30 case and resembles the 7-30 Waters, which is one of the things I was considering. I feel that the Waters would give great performance loaded with a spitzer type bullet rather than the flat points used in lever actions. I know the handgun silhouette shooters get great results from short barrels. I guess this would be feasible in the large action? Was in the gunshop the other day and holding a copy of Cartridges of the World, kicking myself that I didn't buy it. Project for tomorrow

Quote: Carl Scholtz Ph 3368 2881 has a very nice BSA Mod 15 with PH 15C target sights in the rack $399 Cheaper than rebarrelling one AND is the thick walled action if you want to make a 5.6x50R later! I've got 2 of these and they will shoot 10c sized groups at 50m with just the peep sights, all day!

I used to have one of those back in the late 60's when I was shooting smallbore in the Inter-Service comp. Have always regreted selling it and been wanting to get another. Thanks for putting me onto it. I have never been to that shop, I think it is in RedHill? Might go and have a look tomorrow. If I end up getting it, it will probably be a keeper. The small action I have is the little Cadet rifle, too small for me to shoot properly, must have been one that was built for the kids back in the days when our Government had a brain and young people were given the benefit of trust and responsibilities. I won't feel quite so guilty about turning the one I have into something else if I get the 12/15

I thought of the 256 for a lever action I used to have. It was in 357 but the previous owner only shot 38's in it and hence he left an erosion ring in the chamber. It wouldn't eject 357's , even if loaded to 38 spec's.That is why I thought of the 256, because I thought I was up for a rebarrel and I thought of having something a little different. To put a 256 in a martini, that would be the ducks guts, I reckon! You got me thinking now. I think loaded to its responsible maximum, it would be a real little performer.

I have in my possession 2 Martini actions. The first is the little .22 Cadet thing which I intend to use for a .17HMR varmint type thingo. The other is a .310 Cadet size. I don't really want to go exchanging extractors and such like, just get the action tidied up so it all works like it should. Is there any rimmed cartridge that I can convert to other than the old .32/20 or .357 cases or will I have to change extractors of any of the more modern rifle calibres? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

I think you'll have to modify the extractor for just about anything that ain't a 310.... I was just reading in "Cartridges of the World" that 310 Martinis have been proof tested at up to 60,000psi with safety. Opens up all sorts of opportunities as long as it carries a rim. The 357 Mag is a great small rifle round. I had one in a Win 94 and it was dynamite on roos and goats as long as the range was kept under 120yards or so. It's cheap and easy to reload for too. Easily throws a 158 gr proj at 1800 fps or more from a rifle. Don't discount it. Other options are 22 or 17 Hornet, 218 Bee or 32 Winchester Special There's probably heaps of others too.

Lets See, the following list should cover it 17AH, 17Bee, 218Bee, 218Mashburn, 17/222Rimed, 222Rimmed, 22Jet, 22/357Maximum, 6mm 222Rimmed, 25/222Rimmed, 256Win, 25/20, 32/40 (using original barrel with Taipan .316 Jacketed projectiles at 2200fps) I have 22RF, 22WMR, 17AH, 17/222Rimmed, 218Mashburn Bee & 222Rimmed as well as the usual 32/20, 310. The limiting factor in the little Martini's is the size of the barrel shank or rather what's left after chambering. I have a thick walled BSA target rifle that will shortly be rebarrelled to 5.6X50R. This cartridge should give me a super 222Magnum in a very compact rifle. I've seen one only 44/40 but it WAS very thin in the chamber walls.

Get your books out. Here's a couple of offbeat ones,28/30 Stevens and .256 Win Mag. The Sevens is a true 7mm(long and skinny)and the .256 is a .357 Mag necked down.I have forming dies for the .256,you supply the brass. I have dies and brass for both in Brissie.Bertram makes 28/30 brass btw.
