It seems that I'll be going back to Australia next August for a feral cull hunt.  What brands of factory ammo are commonly available in Australia, and of that is there anything that stands out as donkey and pig medicine? (30-06) The outfitter does stock Federal ammo, and tells me that ordering other stuff in advance isn't that big of deal. If I knew what American brands were common, I could start playing around with that around home. It feels funny not be shooting my own handloads. | ||

Dogleg we get all the common brands here. Winchester,Remmington, Highland, Federal etc. I don't think you'll have a problem. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. Federals out of my .30-06 have been best others then handloads... So, I would not worry about them - go and shoot! Klaus | |||

I would expect you will find most of the mainstream ammo makers products on the shelf in Aussie gunshops. But if you are bringing your gun then bring your own ammo - you are allowd 5 KGs of sporting ammo on the airline , and 12 pounds of ammo even in 30-06 is a lot of bombs ________________________ Old enough to know better | |||

5 Kilos of 30-06 is about 180 rounds. Trouble is, its not the only rifle I'll be bringing, and that one will quickly use up the airline limit. I'd 1000 times rather use my own handloads, but that may not be in the cards. My wife will be travelling with me as a non-hunting observer.Can I take 5 kilos on her as well? We've done that travelling to Africa without problem, the fly in the ointment may be Quantas and their dangerous goods permit.I don't know if the dangerous goods permit will be issued to someone whose name isn't on the gun permit. | |||

Here's a thought - let's get your wife a Q permit for ammunition only - on your Canadian firearms licence. I doubt Qantas would question that. We can get the Q permit as soon as you have tickets. I was thinking that too. I know my missus has carried many a kilo of collector ammo around the world without having a firearm in her luggage. Just make sure that "her" ammo is in her suitcase and not yours. ________________________ Old enough to know better | |||

If my wife can get the Quantas permit the "problem" fixes itself.  I'd like nothing better than take my own handloads, partly because I'll know what I have and partly because it's a golden oportunity to test bullets.I'll get on the tickets. | |||

We're off to Oz in the morning, and thanks to the generous offer of one of our Auzzie members a pile of handloaded ammo will be waiting for me at the other side. I'll leave his name out to respect privacy, but if he were to step forward and take a bow I'd certainly lead the applause.  | |||
