Took a sneaky day off yesterday and a mate of mine took me to a property he had access to. Walking down the track we spotted a fallow fawn and mum who quickly busted away, looking down the track we saw a body laying near the fence. Thinking it was a spotlight victim we soon discovered it was a fallow buck that got strangled by the bottom wire of the fence. Poor bugger (we returned later for the head). It'll make an interesting euro mount with a story.

Moving into a lovely gully we bumped a hind but she didn't give us a shot. We sat down for a break and my mate Dean spotted this bloke sneaking in. The range was 70 meters and the 9.3x62 went through both shoulders. He dropped where he stood.

A LOT bulkier than the reds I've shot and we took out most of the meat.

The meat and head were carried back to the track and the car was fetched Big Grin
Not a bad day for a mid-week day off.

Yes well done. They are quite a solid looking beast aren't they and plenty of good feeds from that one. Did you lose much meat from the shoulder shot?

Congrats Bakesy, Nice one.
Can't help thinking you have very much a young Fidel Castro look about you being bearded and wearing that cap Big Grin ( but better looking too ! )
Could you post a pic of yourself, cigar in mouth just so we can see the closest possible resemblence ? rotflmo
Yeah, just something about Fallow and fences. Over the years I've seen a few deer that met their demise on a fence. Most of them were Fallow. Many have a tendency to go under fences when encountered although I have seen many jump fences too.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

No I cut up and vac pack and age in the bag for 5 days or so. When it gets a bit colder I'll hang in the shed (Should I get another one)

You can probably stretch that bout too 2 weeks Bakes. We were doing beef commercially pre covid and were ageing in vac bags for 21 days with no problems. One trick is to turn the bags every 5 days or so as well.

Congratulations, Bakes! It hasn't taken you long to get one.

I've just been listening to greenies on the radio bitching about deer eating fruit trees and flowers around Melbourne. One nurseryman said they eat all sorts of flowers but, IIRC, that they really like grevillias. Must get some seeds and spread the them around my hunting spots Wink
