this is a part of a very rare military firearm from the 1860"s. Anyone know what it is and what firearm it is part of ?

It's a nipple used to convert a cannon to lanyard fire.

First generation Gatling gun 58 cal. reloadable cartridge. It used the standard 58 minie ball and prec. cap. 300-500 were issued with each Gatling gun. Gun crew members picked them up and reloaded as neended.

1) .58 caliber , percussion-primed ,very approx meaurements for the chamber are 2 3/4" long by 7.8" diameter

2) Think US Civil War era , hand cranked but NOT Gatling

Yes , at last...!

The Ager Machinegun and chamber . Although not technically speaking a machinegun at all , rather a repeating single barrel gun with a gravity-fed hopper for the sub-chambers.

"Ager’s "Coffee Mill" Gun

Often confused with the Gatling Gun, the Ager’s Coffee Mill Gun, designed by Wilson Ager, was a multi-cylinder, hopper-fed rapid fire weapon of small-arm caliber. It was not, strictly speaking, a machine gun, as it was powered by an external hand crank.

Several Union units acquired these guns enroute to the Peninsula, including the 56th New York Volunteers. The Ager’s Guns were first used at Lee’s Mill during the Warwick-Yorktown Siege. While stationed near Warwick Court House, Private Patrick Lyons of the 2nd Rhode Island witnessed "a Gatling [sic] gun go to the front; this kind of gun is capable of being fired very rapidly which gives it the name of the Corn Sheller and is very destructive against a body of infantry."

This gun , unlike the Gatling , did not use the standard .58 Minie ball projectile , but used its own special ball , which would have made supply and loading a right bitch I would imagine , no doubt the standard musket ball was used as an expedient .

Thanks Shaun I had found that picture but was after a photograph of a real gun - the Smithsonian Institute has one and I had a printed pic of it somewhere , suspect I ditched it in the house shift .Will have to dig deeper into the Smithsonian archives to find the picture again.
