I was looking at Swazi's website at gear and want some help figuring out what the @!$# a putty is....looks to me like a real short gaiter to go over your boots. Is that correct?

Yep.. IIRC, the correct term is 'puttee'... that's what my grand dad used to call 'em.... My brother and I called 'em gaiters just to piss the old bugger off... he was a good man, and taught us heaps.. ******************************** A gun is a tool. A moron is a moron. Here's the Strine-English that I know. Fag = Cigarette Pufda = Fag arvo = afternoon breakie = breakfast tinny = something you boil tea in cuppa = tea stuffed = sexually fulfilled (get's me in a lot of trouble, when I overeeat and say stuffed) ute = truck reticulated truck = semi with 2 or more trailers Remember that bastard and cunt aren't as bad a cusswords as they are in America. Thats what I know.

D99, close, but no cigar... Cigarette can be a fag, but mostly ciggie, smoke, durry... Fag (as in homosexual male) is a poofter... Arvo and brekky are ok... 'Tinnie' is any small aluminium open top boat. We use a 'billy' to make tea, but we don't 'boil' it - the trick is to put the tea leaves in as the water comes on the boil. Stuffed can mean many things, as in "I'm really in trouble..", "I've eaten my fill"... "I'm really tired..." etc., etc. I've never heard it used in relation to sexual congress other than as an invocation - as in "go and get stuffed" = "go and get fucked." What we call a ute is what you guys call a 'pick up truck'... Articulated vehicles are referred to as 'semi's' if it's a prime mover and a single trailer, and if they have two trailers, they're 'B doubles', if more than two, it's a 'road train' As to the use of 'cunt'... you'd better be on very good terms with the person you're saying it to!! Generally speaking, it is just as offensive here, but in the right circumstances is acceptable... ******************************** A gun is a tool. A moron is a moron. A moron with a hammer who busts something is still just a moron, it's not a hammer problem. Daniel77

Rugeruser, Thanks a ton! I was just going with what I knew from the all our import Ex-pat Aussie shearers in Wyoming, and mostly from what I can remember it's been a long time. Road train was the one I was trying to think of. As Kevin Bloody Wilson says "you can't say Cunt in Canada" and that's the truth! Those Canadian girls will kill you, most PC group of people I have ever met. Canadian men are "dinkum" though. In America you can say cunt as long as their aren't any of them around. Some are ok with it, but it's rare. I love listening to strine, and trying to figure out if I am on the right page or not!

No worries, mate.... just thinking about this - a 'tinnie' can also be a can of beer - "I'm going to get a slab of tinnies.." doesn't mean buying a whole heap of open aluminium boats!! Also, boiling a billy to make tea is usually referred to as 'making a brew' or 'boiling up a brew'... As to saying 'cunt' around women, not a good idea at all - most Aus women will also kill you - those with a good sense of humour will take it in their stride if they're in a 'blokey' environment, but mostly even the roughest blokes will temper their language when women are around. Much like what you say about America. ******************************** A gun is a tool. A moron is a moron. A moron with a hammer who busts something is still just a moron, it's not a hammer problem. What's a "septic"?
|
One of Us |
Septic: Is a term for the undergrown black water (shitwater and peepee water) tank that leaches into a leach field and away from your sistern or good water tank. Most are made with concrete.

UMmm, Septic Tank also rhymes with Yank so its derogatory version of Yank... Like cunt isnt often used around women we wouldnt normally utter it around Americans unless we knew you really well or really didnt like the individual in question

Just remember when you ask for directions in NZ if they tell you to drive down the road and turn left at the "Dairy", you aren't looking for cows. Then when you ask another local where the cows are "Thick as two short planks" is not a compliment. Don't ask me how I know. He looks like you owe him money." - Robert Ruark, Horn of the Hunter, 1953 NRA Life, SAF Life, CRPA Life, DRSS lite

D99 Only joking! "Septic Tank" I think started in WW2 when there were a lot of US servicemen in Australia. "Over-sexed, Over-paid, and over here!" Because the average US serviceman was paid better than the average junior Aussie officer. And the Aussie women (cheap tarts anyway) liked the moolah. As Vince points out it is derived from the "Cockney Slang" tradition of rhyming, ie "Septic Tank" "Yank". Full of shit! (PS Only joking )
