that fatefull day - Feb 1st, 1981 -when an act of such poor sportsmanship befell the Australian Cricket team when playing New Zealand ??? Thats right - the UNDERARM BOWLING debacle... The day fair play and ethics went out the window and the Aussies played the last ball of the game underarm to prevent any chance of NZ scoring the run needed to win the game . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFToAdeS93Q Just thought I would mention it ....... ________________________ Old enough to know better

An iconic moment. Forever confirmed NZ's view of Australians in general.

Naaa the level of angst in NZ just reflects their lack of understanding of the rules of the game & that anything legal goes when playing against mates. ( its only illegal when the Ref catches you. 1st law of NZ sportsmanship ). If it wasn't legal the Umpire would have required another legal ball to be delivered to complete the match. get over it!!! You lost the ICC record continues to record that you LOST. Its a worry when you lot keep bringing up the fact that you don't understand the rules of the game being played.............30+ years after the game. Is there some genetic predisposition in the NZ population to self flagellation ????? ethics, fair play...........between mates your kidding yourself Muzza most people make annual resolutions/vows on New Years Eve. Muzza renews his anti-Aussie vows every Feb 1. Its OK Muzza ........mates are allowed to tell lies about each other in closed company. We forgive you. We know that the burden of losing a game is tough & you need to make excuses. We have some great ones :- Rugby.........its the NZ coach Cricket.......its the S.African coach we were silly enough to employ them under the rules , so we have to live with it. Get over it Muzza, its more than 30 yrs ago, you don't get 30 yrs for manslaughter. no need to keep beating yourself up that you didn't understand the rules of the game 30 yrs ago. Smile, Mate.

personally i thought it was a dark day in the spirit of sport. there were two cricketing brothers that lost any respect i might have had that day. And I'm an aussie, just not at home at the moment! DRSS

Dennis - kiwis will likely never forget the Lilley brothers and their underarm bowling. Its one of those things that goes down in the history of a nation , and the interpretation of the events tends to differ according to which side you support. If its such a great way to play the game why dont the Aussies still bowl underarm? I would like to see the response to that from the Saffas or England at the Gabba during a test , mate .... Hate to disapoint you , but I dont have anti-Aussie vows at all . I do , however , have anti-dickhead vows and renew them far more often than annually ________________________ Old enough to know better

Appreciate the anti-support only relates to international team sports. All in jest. you are right about the spirit of the event, it was legal, seemed OK on the day, NOT something that would be rushed into again & history has borne that attitude out. There's hope yet , the memory is slowly fading it was the younger Chappells .

No it wasn't cheating as it was in the rules. It was very bad sportmanship however. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Yup! And February 1st, 2014 will be along shortly! I had forgotten that little episode. I bet the Pakistanis are going try to forget yesterday though! 47 all out, 1st innings in a 5 day test and no underarm stuff at all.

Did NZ choke again when Chappeli bowled a bent elbow googly? Is that what happened? There has been a bit of history in other ball games too. New Zealand's most famous choke came in 1999, where New Zealand gave up a 24-10 half time lead to concede 33 points and go on to lose 43-31 against rank outsiders France. 2003 saw them eliminated by Trans-Tasman rivals Australia thanks to a Stirling Mortlock interception try, with a final score of 22-10. In 2007 France once again knocked them out, this time at the quarter-finals with a score of 20-18 before you Kiwis wet your nappies again I do note that they did finally win a game in 2011 for which I have previously congratulated them. I never rib Kiwis about the rugby.... the test stats are WELL in their favour. Australia has done pretty well, comparatively, at World Cup because we don't take ourselves too seriously, love a party and can play hungover. I don't know anything about cricket, but Australia world cup team is one of the worst I have ever seen. I think they forget they are playing football instead of rugby!

Who can recall? Obviously not you Muzza. Our famous fast bowler's surname is spelt Lillee, not Lilley. He doesn't have a brother that has played first class cricket. The only things you got right were the date, the sport and the countries involved. Was that the last time New Zealand looked like winning a game? The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood. G'Day Fella's, Sure, it was a low act but that's what happens, when MONEY comes into any sport! Unlike most Kiwi's (it appears), most Australians have actually moved on from this poor sporting moment!!! Doh! Homer Lick the Lolly Pop of Mediocrity Just Once and You Will Suck For Life!

So, why would anyone bring this crap up after 32 years............Geee's, give it a rest. Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.
|

I raised the issue because it was 32 years since the event , and as the recipients of a show of extremely poor sportsmanship during an international cricket match - legal or otherwise - it is a part of our history and as such shouldnt be forgotten. I'm sure your viewpoint would be differant if you were a Kiwi who witnessed the event . Maybe we should forget about Pearl Harbour ,or September 11th , based on your rationale ? ________________________ Old enough to know better

Jeez Muzz, you've got a serious problem if you believe an act of poor sportsmanship is in the same league as those two catastrophic events.

Ron it was bought up here in Australia on the radio as well. It was a pretty crappy thing to in an international sport and did cause a lot of bad feeling in its day. Because I work with a Kiwi I just think its funny and use the incident to stir my mate up. He usually just smashes me back by bringing up the Wallabies crap form ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. Lets heat this thing up a bit. DenisB, and by the way, isn't that Lillies first name? the non illegal- not exactly legal thing is really the same as the heli-hunting debate!! Bring back Weathered, and lets get the Chappell brothers cast in bronze, Auusie's aren't good at recognizing Gold are you?
|

re Lillee;- DenNis is one of the 'menace' ones. probably why he was such a devastating bowler, taking it out against those tossing jibes at him from his first day at school...............He He. Too much water under the bridge to heat things up again in either topic methinks. gotta have sympathy for both Muzza & Dennis Lillee . Muzza for his angst against the wrong person for 30 yrs defiling NZ national honour & Dennis for being blamed for something he never did. Aussies are good at targeting tall poppies, Kiwis are just as good at it as well. tarnishing a gold statue of the Chappells in bronze would be quite fitting. You lot can take up pigeon breeding in your spare time & train them to crap on the statue. Honour will be saved & we can move on to toss insults across the ditch at each other about more recent goings-on. We haven't forgotten about the "non illegal- not exactly legal thing" that the NZ corporate raider (Brierly wasn't it ???)did, who stripped all the cash out of the iconic Aussie airline Ansett & faded away to his villa in the land of the long while cloud to enjoy his spoils !!!!!!. He He............we might find some heat to liven up the brothers after all Highlander .
