Walked into a Darwin Tackle/gun shop today and thought I'd pick up some 6.5x55 ammo. I was after highland as they are cheap Big Grin. The choises they had were Remmington (core lok bullet) and Federal (god knows what bullet). I know they both make good ammo but they are also dearer. I had two blokes come over and tell me how good the ammo was (both brands)and how much succsess they have had on pigs with them. They were really pushing it hard. I told them that I usually use Highland to which they scoffed Roll Eyes. I then told them that the pigs I've shot with Highland didn't really care that a cheap brand was used, and I walked out. I went to Tex's gunshop and got some Highland for $8 a box cheaper.

All I usually get in the city store when asking for items is a bloody blank look! Therefore no hard earned there.

Tex is ok when he or one of the blokes are in store, otherwise it's more blank looks.

The Coolalinga shop seems ok but at last look he appeared to have added an extra zero to all his prices. Near $50 bucks for a 500 of 2207 is plain ridiculous.

If all goes well, see you on the weekend Bakes Smiler

I stopped going to Coolalinga when the bloke behind the counter and the gunsmith didn't know that 7mm Mauser was the same as 7x57. Didn't know there was a new bloke there. I usually go to Tex but I was in town and thought I'd just duck in a see.
Yeah Dan I should be in Katherine by 4-5ish.
Went out with big Tone on the weekend. Got some geese. May take a morning trip out after them this week.

We're lucky to have some great guys dealing locally out of their 'back-yards'. Always fair, always a yarn and excellent advice. Of course no massive 'retail shopfront' helps keep prices under control. We're three hours ouf Melbourne, not so too far out of the city really.

Do other states not encourage folks to deal from home, rather than more traditional retail enterprises?

I was told it's the wholesalers. They tolerate it in the small country towns but will not deal with guys in the bigger places.(where there is already gunshops)

Yep ... larger distributors want "shop front" exposure. No point having too much competition in one spot either as it promotes genuine competition ... and that's bad for profit margins!

I just live for the day someone "small" bites the bullet and becomes an official distributor for Midway USA, but I think pigs'll fly first.
Cheers...

Well I've just bought a some items from Cabela's. Took four days to get here and cost me $80 including delivery. For the stuff I bought I could not get it here in Australia for the same price delivered.

I had a gander at the Midway catalogue; no shortage of choice there. I always think I've got just about every knick knack I need, but there's always something else.

I agree it would be amazing to have access to such range here. Even the largish stores I have been into in Melbourne don't seem to have too much range though - same merchandise everywhere ...
