he National Park bordering on my farm has 1080 fox baits being laid year round now. Of course, I'd never take my dogs into the park when I'm trout fishing but, if I did, would a muzzle stop them getting the fox baits. Would they be more likely to be bitten by a snake if they sniffed one out while wearing a muzzle. regards, mike

My concern would be them eating something poisoned in the Park but wandered out into your place to die. Nothing dies instantly with 1080 - dogs are pretty fast but still 40 mins plus - more than enough time to get through the fence...... You should be able to get emetics from your local vet but you would have to be right there as the dog ate whatever it was. Success rate isnt high but it is better than nothing. I would be putting muzzles on your mutts for a long time - the poison is viable untill the host dead-animal has decayed totally away. Also need to watch out for mummified poisoned animals a long time down the track... No idea on your snakebite issue. Have "they" not given you any information as to what you should do ? ________________________ Old enough to know better

Luckily for us 1080 use was done away with some time ago (60s-70s). It is a very effective product. A poison that just keeps on killing. Are fox an import there? Don't limit your challenges . . . Challenge your limits

Yep, foxes were imported here from Europe in the early days of settlement. You can see them just about everywhere now, and are classified as a noxious pest to be poinsoned, shot on sight etc. I even have a couple of semi-tame ones that turn up at the back door looking for a feed every evening. I'm not allowed to shoot THOSE ones though

If your going to use a muzzle make sure its like the ones the greyhounds guys use so the dog can still open its mouth to pant. In summer dogs can overheat quickly. You could train them not to pick up food from the ground, an electric coller is ideal for this. If your worried however, just don't take them! As to the snake bite. They would have the same risk muzzled or not. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Mike 1080 is a demon. Sheep properties near me often lay it out, and never notify us as required, but they have hung signs on gates etc. Pity because dogs can't read but they can jump or push through a fence. Found two dead foxes this month on my farm which is highly likely to have died from 1080 and came onto my property to die. Kills a lot of eagles too. We have a taxidermied wedgetail which was found dead in a different paddock but in good condition so 'someone' took it to a taxidermist rather than leave it to rot.

Thanks for the comments - my wife found a dead fox the other day. Thought that the shooters who trestass next door had shot it. Also found a dead eagle - I thought I'd read somewhere that 1080 didn't kill eagles. mike

A lot of eagles die from poisoned wheat or oats being put out to kill galahs and the like. Eagles eat the poisoned pigeons, galahs etc and die as well. Might not be from fox baits, but eagles also eat carrion.

Ten Eighty, Jesus I hate that shit, pardon the french. I`ve heard of people who`ve stopped for a slash and a leg stretch in the middle of nowhere, and their dog has picked up a bait. There simpley has to be a better way.

I agree. Hey, just imagine if you could get a tiny piece of lead and throw it so hard and so fast that it would, in all likelyhood, kill whatever it hit!! Now that would be cool. Oh yeah......we can do that already......
