The book arrived today. It is very good and very up to date , includes 2006 information. I needed the reminder while I wait out summer for the cooler weather to start hunting again.

Awesome ... mine should be in the mailbox!!! It'll be a slightly sad read though as it looks like I've lost all my hunting areas to the fires. Think I'll head over in mid-January to take a look see.

One of the pleasing things in the book Con is that 2 of the top 4 heads ever were taken in 2005 and 2006 . Despite the fires of 2003 the trophy potential just gets better . My theory is the numbers are so good now and the spread of sambar so broad that the fires only affect the hunting to a minor degree . To cheer yourself up have a look at the head taken by David Ingpen . You will drool !

Other than being a great read ... I bought mine as an investment. Check out abebooks ... Ken Pearce's first edition sells for US$150+ in the States Luckily I have all 3 editions.

It was meant to be a Christmas present for me too , but the wife is in China so I thought I would risk it ! The content is very good and in a way is what Ken Pearces' new edition should have been . The discussion on projectiles and calibres for sambar is excellent . I have only found one slight error and it is irrelevant to hunting . It will be interesting to see the comments from some of the experts like Jim Lay and Terry Allen on what Errol has written on hunting techniques and sambar behaviour .

Personally I think the book is better than Ken Pearce's ONLY because its much more specific in its content. And its MUCH easier to read then say "The Hog Deer" etc... I've emailed Errol some feedback and the only beef I have against the book is that the A4 format is too big to read comfortably whilst on the "man throne" A smaller format I believe would have suited the book better. I'll be ordering my copy of the 2nd book in the New Year.

I will have a look at the book when i see one about.

Try Peter Moncrief at www.bundukibooks.com for the Ken Pearce book .... of which first editions bring around US$150+ in the States . Wonder what Errol's book will bring in 20years

As far as Errol is concermed, has anyone seen his latest article in 'Guns and Game'? Allegedly about Quality Deer Management.

I would say that we would need far more research done prior to advocating ANY sort of QDM for Sambar. Especially the 'open slather approach' he appears to advocate.
Of course, that could just be my take on it, but several people have commented on it to me with some concern.
As an example, a Sambar herd in an enclosure, while providing some insight into animal behaviour, does not directly translate to a wild population. As for 'exponential growth' bacteria increase exponentially, Sambar do not.
Any one here read it? If so, your thoughts?

Re: QDM.
Didn't Brian Murphy essentially apply the "Whitetail model" to Fallow in Tasmania? To his credit, Mason does admits that the QDM model is only for use until greater specific data is collected for Sambar at which point it can be finetuned ... and its basically an attempt to recognise them as a resource and safe-guard the Sambar herd from a "vermin" listing.

The sambar herd is quite safe, for the moment, thanks to the efforts of many people, the VHAC, Gamecon Vic, SSAA, F&G, & the VDA among them.
Of particular note is the effort of Phillip Brown, who authored the paper use to refute the flawed arguments contained in nomination #756 being put to the Minister.

Correct, Murphy did apply the Whitetail management model (somewhat modified) to Fallow, with good success once it was fine tuned. This worked as Fallow and Whitetail appear to have similar group dynamics. Just ask Dr Hall, the guy in charge of the program.

To attempt to apply the same model to Sambar, an animal of somewhat different habits, would, in my humble opinion, be a serious error.
We need considerably more data in order to reach even a preliminary understanding of QDM for Sambar. Max Downes work, while dated, is (in my opinion at least) still valid, as are his conclusions.
One thing is apparent though. In the face of the Greens threat to ALL hunting OZ wide, we need to present a united front, not go spearing off on our own quests.
JMHO, YMMV.

BTW, the book is easily worth the $100 or so posted, just for the pics.
