this place could do with a few more hunting storys instead of all the bull shit that goes on here over who is wright and who is wrong

this story is from the roar of 2005

Magnum creek was named after my ruger 44 mag as it turned out to be the ideal rifle to hunt the tight ti tree and native mix cover that sika deer love to live in, it's short, point's fast, a big bullet for shooting through the crap and a quick back up shot if needed.

After hunting in a place a few time's you start to learn how it all work's, where to hunt and where not to which wind is best and time of day.
Knowing where the stag's are going to roar is a big help and can up your chances of success.

It take's about 20min to get to the top of the hill looking into magnum creek from camp and straight away there were 3 or 4 stag's single calling and one heehawing below me Smiler
Sweet the one in the ti tree on the other side is going well so dropping down and cross the creek up the bank and to with in 50m of the stag on a hind in heat. Now those of you that hunt jap stag's single calling over a hind you will know the noise's they can make it gets the hair on your neck standing up that's for sure Smiler wind is good so in i go doing a sneaky pete through the tangled web of ti tree and crap to get within 15m of them the hind spots me in the end and bolt's with the stag wondering what was going on and trots off after her.
She had only gone 100m and it was all on again so i closed the gap again and got the drop on the old bugger mid roar with a shot in the neck Razzer

I had been after this stag for a few year's he was never an 8ptr when i had seen him before but still a very cunning stag.
Back to camp with the stag for a feed and a yarn about the day's hunt with the other's.

Back up the track another day with a mate rob who was over from OZ for the hunt, same thing got to the top and 2-3 good roar's and one a long way off we dropped onto the first one and got to with in 100m of him roaring his gut's out, we were in an open bit of beach the stag was going mad with me calling back to him in his patch.
It was rob's shot and he was sitting 20m up the hill from me, but because of the angle he couldn't get a clear shot at him, he wasn't big boy but was a nice little 8ptr after 5min of playing cat and mouse he had enough and bailed on us.
He will be bigger next year so it was for the best in the end.
That was the end of that gully for the day so we dropped back into the creek and not long after came across a hind on a small clearing just of to the side feeding away.

She was looking a little skinny so rob decided to take the shot Smiler
she turned out to be 12 year's old so a little over the hill really,
and was a good one to cull out.

The carry back to camp isn't a bad one,
Rob on the job not some thing you see very often with him.
he doesn't carry many hole like this and like's to bone a bit of meat out and carry it that way but there was little meat damage from the shot.

The last crossing and it's the deepest it's a bugger having short leg's Eeker

We got back to camp to find my other mate had a good day aswell.
shooting his first 8pt jap roaring, he had a couple roaring and had let the smaller one go when this one stepped out and gave a roar booommmffffaaa!! he had his stag

We had a bit of a clean up and a good feed and sorted out the meat and the camp out.
(note the skin straps to make the back leg's into a pack for easy carrying)

i had been after this one stag for 8 years and he alway manage to give me the slip so i had come up with a cunning plan to get him he was roaring well this morning but i couldn't get him to move off his hinds into a spot where i could get a shot at him so instead of the usual single call roar i would do i tryed a few quieter ones with a bit of mewing which seem to do the trick and got him moving out he came into a bit of an openning and booommmfffaaa!!!! down he went
i later had his jaw ages at 13 yeares old so he was past is prime but was still the king of his patch and a nice 8 pt head

We had a good trip and shot a few other's one i dropped on the river bank and it rolled into the tide and was washed away before i could get to it Frowner
before long it was time to head home at the end of another trip the hard way Big Grin

Nice story!

Does the helicopter company drop hunters in predetermined locations, or do you have to indicate which valley you want to hunt?
