I'm considering selling my nice spotting scope in order to get one of those shooting range cameras. Does anyone use one or can recommend a certain brand/model?

I use the spotting scope just for range use and the camera makes more sense since it removes the heat wave look at distance and you (should) be able to i.d. where you are hitting easier.

So, what other method are you going to use to read the mirage?

I have used some.

They worked as advertised but I am afraid I cannot remember the names!!

Caldwell sells one that goes up to a mile, which sounds like the ones we have used.

You download an app and see the target on it.

That's what I am considering using from now on. Most of my shooting is done inside of 300 yards

It's your scope. Use it however you wish. You can use it to predict the weather if you wish.
I just believe that using a scope to read the mirage "boil", without some form of mirage board near the target, is futile.

Have you looked at the electronic targets? Both silver mountain and Shotmarker offer reasonably priced options. As an added bonus it also records velocity and calculates SD and average velocity along with group size.

The electronic targets are great and I was very serious about them.

The mirage indicator was meant to be a little funny. I use my Kowa spotting scope for mirage. That is why there is a picture of it.

I understand that you use the Kowa to see the mirage but, what method gives you the intensity of the "boil". When shooting BR we use mirage boards made from "Coro-plas" with alternating 1" wide black & white bars running horizontally from top to bottom of board.

I shoot Highpower matches, mostly across the course.

We cannot add anything down range, however there are several range flags to help keep an eye on the wind.

When shooting at 600 yards I will focus my scope on the 300 yard berm. After setting the focus I will point the scope at either the target frame or the number board if the number board is on the impact berm (higher than the target). Looking at the mirage against the number board will give a good indication of switches, boils, pickup, let off, or flattened out.
