Hey guys,
Of you all that shoot the 22BR and 6BR alot what would you all say is the effective range of the two rifles, say on something like a groundhog?
Thanks,
CRoberts

I shoot long range matches quite a bit and bench rest friend of mine keeps trying to get me to switch to the 6BR for the 600 yard matches,
but so far stick with the 308.
I have and do see more and more shooters showing up for 600 yard matches w/ the 6BR and they do well. Bare in mine these fellows are experienced shooters and are shooting off slings, no rest/ bi pods, etc. You can now shoot in what they call F class which is supported w/ bi pod, bags, etc. In either case, the round performs quite well.

Determining wind, est. range, etc. would make it more challenging that shooting at a stationary target, but sure it can be done well with these rounds.

Bear in mind that there are two different kinds of 6mmBR! The kind shot in bench rest, and the kind shot in long range matches. They have a different twist rate. Typically the benchrest bullets are same as 6mm PPC ie. 66-68 gr, bullets. The long range shooters use 107 grain bullets. I only mention this because you mentioned 22BR and 6BR in "the same breath".

Croberts: I have two Rifles in caliber 22 Remington Bench Rest and another in 6mm Remington Bench Rest!
I have killt both Rock Chucks and Prairie Dogs in excess of 450 yards with all of them!
I limit myself to shots in the 550 yard range with most all my Varminters and if things were right I would not hesitate to try a 550 yard shot with any of these three Rifles!
By the way my 22 BR's are both factory stock Remington 40XB-BR models. I tried for many years to get a 40X in 6mm BR but they were just way to popular for one to make it to the store shelves!
I had to have a custom 6mm BR made for myself and it IS a splendidly accurate Rifle!
I am a Varminter and rate both cartridges very highly, for accuracy, efficiency, long barrel life, low recoil and easy on brass!
Great choices!
I know I am not fully answering your questions as I fear my uses and self imposed limits may not allow me to fully answer you!
I do want to impress upon you though my happiness with the accuracy of all three of my Rifles! That accuracy will help extend range for what ever needs you are seeking!
I would take a guess and relay to you that a Groundhog hit at 700 yards with a 6mm BR Varmint bullet would certainly be a dead Groundhog!
A good laser rangefinder and a wind gauge and some patience and you may be able to stretch that effective range a bit further!
I use 68 grain bullets in my 6mm BR and 40 gr. bullets in one of my 22 BR's and 50 gr. bullets in the other! So you see ultra long range is not my objective. Accuracy and lethality at moderate ranges is.
Hold into the wind
