Try somewhere around 25 gr of N540 in Win. brass with a Rem 7 1/2M primer. Seat the bullets near or into the lands. That load should give you 2900+ fps out a 24" barrel. It gives 2930 fps in my 24" 1 in 9 twist Douglas XX, and gets to 1K supersonic. I have heard of some people that use N550, and RL15, but N540 is better in my rifle. Hope this helps some. It is surprising what the little 223 will do with a good load at 1K. Hope this helps some.

PaPa 260......May I be half the man my grandsons think I am!

I use Vectan SP7. 26gr. gives just under 3000 fps from my Savage FLVSS. I've used this load at 900 and 1000 yards quite a bit.

never to forgive. never to forget. never to give up.

A little more info might help to get a few more interested in this post .
I'm going to be shooting these in a Contender pistol..... I'm having barrels made by On Target Technologies , 18" long for both .. #1 is a 223AI w/ a 7.7 twist - #2 is 22-204 Imp w/ a 7 twist .both barrels will be shooting 75 A max bullets primarily . At the beginning they will be using 3x12 Burris scopes with 20 moa bases and insert Burris rings . People tell me that 1000 yds and beyound can't be done.....with this pistol , but it is , guys are doin this with bolt pistols , well ....I want to do it with the limited strength of the contender, with 22 cal barrels .
The barrel I haven't started yet. but will probably be the best...A 18" 6 twist ..22 cal made from the 5.6 x50R case ,Improved of course for the 90 gr Sierra bullets. These will be shot as Bench Rest guns , off rests with target forends and grips. Just for grins.... I hope the rifle guys don't mind...LOL

I will preface this with a big "I THINK"...

I THINK... a pistol with an 18" barrel is not legal. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

From what Ive been told rifles can't be shorter than 16" and as a pistol ,they won't let me play if the barrel is longer than 18" .....Just for Grins.....

Greetings;
I've Been reading this forum for awhile, and don't Post very often. Well here goes.

Barrels are limited to 18" w/NO brake in the pistol plateform. In the 5.56X50R, 90 grains are what is being tested, don't know if anyone that has proven this to work yet. Old Fart, you said you where thinking of having a barrel with a 6 twist barrel made, who have you contacted? The fastest I've seen is 6.5 by Hart and Kreiger. Will let you know how the Kreiger is in May after the Pistol is built. I HAVE a Kreiger(6.5), a Broughton(7, 5C rifleing) and a Bauska "Gain Twist" (starts as 11-ends up as a 7in 18") these will be for 1K shooting. The Gun will be debuted at Pella late this summer (06).
Let me know how your testing goes as I figure it will take most of the summer to get these barrels ready.

Well, hope this wasn't out of place or was Bad information. Take Care

It's going to be difficult to get sufficient velocity from an 18" barrel to make it to 1000 yards with any .224" bullet, regardless of what powder you use.

Your best bet is N540 and hope for the best.

Get some Varquat235 - 25 grains will give you over 4000 f/s. A new powder being recently imported.

Guy I know has been getting 10" groups at 1500 metres.

Old Fart, the important thing to know is at what velocity will the 75 A-Max remain supersonic at 1,000 yards. I can tell you that initial velocity of 2750 ft/secs will do it all the way to 1,100 yards at 3,500 ft altitude and 85 degrees F, and relatively low humidity of course...

Well , Have finally been able to shoot these guns out at extended ranges ....
This last weekend my friend Steve (SSCoyote )and I worked them over , with Excellent results.

this plate was 1000 yards , groups where from the 223ai , lower and 22-204 imp, upper. All these groups where shot from a Bower rest system .
our success was due to the Very Impressive Custom barrels of Mike Sirois .. On Target Technologies , Burris Scopes and the great 8x32 Black Diamond , and the excellent bullets of Hornady...the Amax line
With Steve's outstanding spotting ..We ..got out to 776 yards on a PD...

Just thought you all might enjoy the pic's...
