Help! I am now the owner of a Winchester 700 custom barreled bench rest rifle in Remington 6 x 47 (necked up 222 Remingtom Meg). I need some starting points and recommendations for loads for a 68-70 grain HPBT or any other suggestions on how to get the most accuracy out of this piece. FYI, I have dome much reloading but mostly shotgun and hunting loads in 308. However I am a novice at precision reloading for benchrest use and any hints would be welcomed.

Thanks and have a great 2007

My benchrest gunsmith still shoots the 6 X 47 and does well with it. He shoots IMR 4895 in it and drops powder to the bottom of the neck with a 68 grain bullet.

A good piece of advise is to get away from mass produced bullets and shoot a few custom. Bib, Fowler, and such. Should give a lot better results.

Rkpierce: I am going to answer your question!
I recommend the fanatstic Euber 68 grain bullet along with Federal 205M primers and H 322 powder! In my all factory stock Remington 40XB-BRKS (with 24" heavy factory barrel) the Remington brass and the above components provide me with ALL the accuracy "I" am capable of!!!
The 6x47 is a wonderful cartridge and I really enjoy shooting this Rifle and cartridge!
Best of luck with your new 6x47!
I hesitate to offer my exact powder charge due to variations and this and that. But I will say my load is a rather moderate (no where near maximum) load!
Be sure and let us know how your Rifle shoots!
Hold into the wind

Since you are new at this it is Ok to start with conventional bullets to get gain some familiarity with this round.
The twist usually used in this round is 1 turn in 14 inches so it will NOT stabilize long pointy bullets. Stick to 65 to 75 grain bullets.

Some of the older versions of the Sierra and Speer manuals have loading data for this round.
The Cartridges of the World 4th edition lists Mike Walker's load recommendation at 23.5 gr of IMR 4198 with 70 to 75 grain bullets.
I have used 23 grains of IMR 4198 with several different 70 and 75 grain bullets with excellent results. None of them are expensive bullets.
All shoot better than I can hold.
They include the 70 Sierra Match HPBT, 70 grain Hornady spitzer, 75 grain Speer HP and the 70 grn Nosler Ballistic Tip.

There is not much to loading this round except for deciding what dies to use. Conventional 7/8-14 press dies are not common but they can be found. You will need a long tapered expander to open up the case necks of .222 Rem mag brass to 6mm.
I use Wilson dies and one of the little bench rest arbor presses. About the simplest loading process there is.

You can call Sierra's toll free line and they will give you data for this round.

This is a fun and economical round that has been by passed by today's preoccupation with high velocity.

One last caution though.
You say your rifle is a Wincheter 700?
What ever it is, if the custom barrel happens to have a tight neck you may have to turn the necks. So you need to verify that issue first.

Any questions just PM me.
