Has anyone done this?

http://demigodllc.com/srm/

It looks like great fun. Like Sporting Clays is to clay target shooting, this looks like rifle shooting in hunting scenarios.

I'm gonna check out the March 1st shoot.

RC let us know. It DOES sound interesting. Known distances but no sighters! Love it!

You Bet!

I'm Pumped! Up to 350 yards the targets are 6" and from 350 to 700 the targets are 12".

There is a 900 yard target that is 16X24.

Gonna be fun at the least. I'm just going to shoot my .243wssm with a 70 gr nosler BT varmint bullet. It's what I have.

Well guys, I shot the match!

It was as much fun as you can have with your clothes still on!

It's like sporting clays with a rifle. A walk through course with 10 stations, six targets at each for a total of 60 targets. Once at the station, everybody identifies the targets and you shoot in rotating order. You have 3 minutes to engage and fire 1 shot at each target. Your squadmates act as spotters and direct you to the next target with distance information so you can dial it up and shoot....

Here's what the targets looked like...either diamonds or circles .......

Some guys on the practice range in the morning checking their 'o'...........

A typical 5 to 10 thousand dollar gun that everybody had ........... except me! I just shot my factory rig and was the only one!

Here's my squad........we had a great time. Nobody was too serious. We laughed and joked the whole day! It was all about having fun and testing your skills..........I'm on the far right.

Here are the event organizers with their .338RUM and .338 Lapua Mag, respectively. They put on quite a shooting display on practice day shooting a 1700, yes that's 1-7-0-0 YARD target!

I shot better than I hoped. I hoped to hit 30 of the 60 targets....I hit 35. Two of the guys I was shooting with (who had 5 thousand dollar rigs) only got 28 and 40 targets respectively, so I felt I did well. I hope they weren't just trying to make me feel good!...........

Congratulations RC. That takes guts to go out with a factory rifle. Now, tell us how you did it. What was the rig you used: caliber, scope. What were you zeroed for? How did you estimate the range etc. etc. Inquiring minds want to know.
Peter.

Thanks for the compliment Peter!

I was shooting my coyote rig. It's a .243 wssm with a 70 gr Nosler BT varmint bullet if you can believe that! I qualified on our 1000 yard range with it and then later killed a coyote at 930 yards with the same gun and load!

It has a simple Leupold VX-ll with the LRVD on it. I put a Stoney Point after market target knob on the elevation dial to avoid using a coin. It has the Stoney Point Rapid Pivot Bipod system on it. I used the little bench model (not the most solid rest). I went to the JBM ballistics website and downloaded all the data for my chronographed load. I checked it by a little practice on our long range and it worked just fine. What I was really blown away about was the scope returned to '0' after dialing up and down on every station. I was worried about that with a cheap hunting scope. It was amazing to get to the last station, dial a 225 yard target just to see if it would work, and smoke it after dialing 60 or so times!

Since we were shooting ranges out to 875 yards, I zeroed at 300. I have to say that everything under 400 yards I crushed with authority. I didn't even dial some of the closer ranges around 250. I just looked at the data and held a little low and off for wind...........and we had some wind! Since the event was timed, I even just used the ballistic reticle out to 400 on the first couple of stations to save time checking the data and dialing. The 12" targets were pretty easy using the reticle........

I figure the wind is what killed me with that little varmint bullet. It was no match for the guys shooting their .260 Remingtons and 7mm Mags..... . The wind varied and was around 15 mph at times.

I have great glass. The Leica 15X56 Geovids did the ranging but weren't really needed. The ranges to the targets were supplied to you at the station. What really amazed me also was that I was able to actually see the bullets shot by the people I was spotting for! I saw most of them all the way to impact! It was unreal! Sometimes I could just see the distortion in the air made by the bullet but other times I could actually see the copper bullet in flight! Seeing the bullet curve with the wind was cool!

I'll be shooting this again the first Sunday of next month. Next time I'll bring a gun more suited; My .264 Winny. It was away getting pilar bedded or I would have used it this time. I know I will be able to improve with it.

Has anybody else been to a shoot like this one?

So, you did not have or use a mil-dot scope? Would this have helped ie. instead of dialing in each come-up? Shooting at know distances might have made this possible.

All of the other competitors dial the elevation and hold off for wind. Everybody serious in this game has a high dollar scope that is set up in Mil or MOA on the horizontal reticle so holding off for wind can be done accurately according to their data.

This looks like something I have to do.We are going to Arizona and Utah in July anyway,so I asked the wife if we could leave 10 days earlier so I could make this shoot. She gave me the thumbs up.
I'll be using an off the shelf Rem.700 BDL in .243 shooting 100 gr.hornady BTSP with a leupold VX-II AO 6-18 scope that came with target knobs.Have gotten into the steel silloutte game 3 yrs ago(40 targets from 220-550 yds.-OFF-HAND-)got addicted to it.If I understand the rules of this game you are allowed to use front AND rear shooting bags. Please clarify that for me and I'll see you July 11th.
I also understand going up against the big dollar gun guys. They don't care what you shoot, they are just happy to see you.
