Hello,
Believe the target itself is 72" square and the black is either 42 or 44" in diameter. X ring is about 10" if I remember and 10 ring close to 20" I have some targets stored in my garage, but "google" National Target Co. and they will have the exact diminsions for you . I wore out several barrels shooting at that target and should remember it well, but age has a way of dulling ones memory. Big advanatage of the 1000 yard target that a hit on the target face is worth a minimum of 5 points if you view that as a plus!!

Get you a 100 yard zero, assuming 308 or '06 caliber, make sure load/round is exceeding some 1200 fps at 1000 yards, supersonic, and add to your 100 yard zero approx. 36 more minutes of elevation and you should be on paper. If you want to practice shooting on the computer, give www.shooterready.com a try. Very realistic practice and can pick up some practice with the wind and elevation facets of long range shooting. Good Luck.

otay thanks . I am shooting a 300 win mag right now. I dont know if this chambering is legal for use in the contests ,but I really really jumping like how it shoots with just hunting bullets. So I imagine it would be better with some bergers, or lost rivers if I can find some. I am very comfortable shooting it to 500 , I think it would be amazing punchin holes at 1000.

Berger's are a fine bullet, but if I were you would try some Sierra Match King 190's or even heavier. 300 Win Mag. is great long range caliber and gives you about 15% adavantage over the 308/06 rounds from my own experience. Detractors of the magnum rounds are the somewhat accelerated barrel wear, increased recoil, but they definitely do shoot at extreme ranges. Can't have everything you know.

I went to bergers website and they don't have .308 bullets that are reccomended for 10 twist. The barrel is a #6 shilen SM in 1 in 10 twist. Now I am using 180 Nosler BT's with 75.8 gr of RL 22. Loaded .020 off rifling. wont fit the mag but when I hunt with it is rested loaded one at a time. Any thoughts??? bewildered

Hello,
Can't give any advise on the powder charge, but curious why seating the bullets some 20thous' off the rifling?? If you are single loading, might try closing the gap just a bit. Would think attempting to shoot at 1000 yards definitely for target shooting only and w/ the 10 twist, 300 win mag set up, go the Sierra route and don't believe you will be dissapointed.

Ok Thanks dsiteman

load them 20 off because I was under the impression that full length sizing will cause a slight ammount of space around the taper on the cartridge. This would make the bullet not centered in the rifling. I thought that if I loaded it closer that the bullet might contact the the rifling on the bottom of the barrel. This could cause accuracy problems or worse. That is what I got out of the reloading manuals I have anyhow. Do I have anything to worry about, or should I start neck sizing and loading closer. Thanks

Do you trim your brass by chance?? Even though you may have a tight chamber, brass will flow, grow if you will and needs to be trimmed to proper length. Magnum rounds are obviously intense and not suggesting that you place bullet into lands and grooves, but might shorten up the "jump" a wee bit, say to 10 thous. Do you have a Moe's gauge or similar gauge that will tell you the size of your chamber reading off of a fired case?? RCBS makes such a device and so does Stoneypoint which lets you use your calipers to get a measurement. With that data, you can resize the brass to be slightly under that in order to feed of course and yet not be such a strain/stretch on the brass when fired. As a suggestion, give Sinclair International a call and ask them if they still publish their manual on reloading techniques, good book for all levels for those that reload. Depicts various tools, aids, etc. to help produce custom ammo for each particular rifle.

yes I use lee trimming equipment it trims them consistently to the same length. The only thing I use is a stoney oal guage. I use it for every type of bullet I shoot. Theres a diffrent tool for a fired case? One thing I dont understand is how someone can resize the case, but not size it completely. I think I'm understanding you right. I thought all you could do is just neck size, or full length size. I guess I have a bunch to learn. I ordered that Benchrest Primer Book. I will look for the other one.

Bush

Are you asking about the 1000 yard Benchrest target??? The target is 42 inches square, the bull is 13 inches and the ten ring is 7 inches.
