Hey Everyone great forum.

The questions I have are.
1. Is there a formula to find the best barrel length for a particular caliber.

2. If the barrel is .30 cal, 26" long and 1:12 Twist is there a formula for working out the best projectile length and weight. What is the most commonly accepted one for this barrel configuration .

3. Which powder is the best for this .308 setup.

4. Do I need to have the action bedded as the stock already has bedding blocks in it.

Thanks Heaps Neil.

1. There is no best barrel length for a particular caliber. Too many variables like bullet, powder burn rate, etc. Your 26 inch barrel will allow plenty of velocity with a .308.

2. Search for Greenhill's formula. I've had great luck with Sierra 175 grain Match Kings in a 1-12 barrel.

3. Good results with IMR 4064 and Varget. There are many good powders for the .308.

4. Only way to tell is to shoot it. If you get group shifts, it could be a bedding problem.

You can take that 26" barrel out to 1k yards if you have the right load.

Like John I shoot 175 smk. I use only Varget but have tried others. For a 500mtr shoot, try the 168 smk or the 155 palma. They would be worth a try in a 1:12.

I you have the time I would bed the action and open up that barrel channel.

Neil, I was out with my VSSF .308 today and in good conditions my first group at 300 yards was a .24 MOA with the 175 MK and 42.2 grains of IMR 4064, Federal 210M and Winchester brass, neck sized only. The a friend tried some 155 MK's and 46 grains of Varget in R-P brass and F210's and shot a .21 MOA at the 300 yard line. Both of these were only three shot groups, but still pretty.

Hi 308Sako
Man that sounds great, 3 shot groups that small at that distance, Wow. That makes me want to go out to the range and do a few rounds right now.
Thanks for the load information.
Oh by the way, did you have any seating depth, overall length or distance off the lands for these particular loads.

Thanks again
Neil.

The overall length was 2.810, or magazine length as the Sierra is a length tolerant bullet. The rifle has a Tubb firing pin spring and the trigger breaks at 30 OZ. The action screws are torqued to 65 Ft/Lbs and the barrel has already seen 4,100 rounds, but never more than 75 without a cleaning. Scope is a Leupold Mark 4 - 16X with a dot reticle and it sits on Baer bases with the 20 degree slope. Hope it helps.

Those are two "classic" loads for the .308. Now you need to quit foolin' around at the short range and find a 1000 yard target. Did you mean 65 INCH-pounds?
