This is mainly fuelled by curiosity, having read the Odyssey of a Varmint Hunter and 1000 yard Precision Rifle Shooter books, what would people recommend?

I was thinking a 6.2/284 chambering, 27, 28 inch long barrel, sourced from Kreiger, Ljila (spelling?)etc,

and one of these actions:

Borden;

Up market Remington 700 clone, like the Stiller or similar;

a.n.other makes, which I have not heard of.

Scope= Schmidt under Bender 3-12x50 or 4-16x50, probably one of the military / police type scopes.

Occasionally, I have the opportunity to shoot at 600+ yards on a rifle range and was wondering etc..

My combination would be:

BAT Action
Krieger Barrel 6.5x284 1x8.5 twist 30"
Kelbly Trigger
Whatever stock fits you best
Nightforce Optics

May I ask why? Not in disagreement but curios as to why one chooses one over the other. I've been thinking about building a 6mm br norma for varminting long shots. If I have the budget to go high dollar I have been thinking the predator action looks pretty good. Low budget would be a trued up Savage target model. DW

I would go with one of the Stiller receivers. I don't think the Kelbly trigger will work properly on the Bat. It will fit, but the firing pin fall will not work properly.

I'm with Butch on the Stillers. I currently have 4 Predators in my shop for builds. 3 of them are cosecutively numbered. At the customers request, I measured the actions for headspace and stub length. All 3 are identical. Prior to the introduction of the Predator you would spend considerably more money for an action that was manufactured to these standards.

to get your feet wet, I would really look hard at the Savage. The latest iteration of the Accu-trigger will go down to 6oz, and there are still no flies on the 308 at that yardage. Or buy a 243 and rechamber to 6-284.
