I was not entirely sure what forum to place this under, so I am putting it here. My 12 year old son has expressed an interest in hand loading as well as accuracy shooting. I would like to purchase a rifle for him with the following requirements: Managable for a strong 12 year old. Reloadable. Inexpensive. Accurate at 100m, possibly more if interest grows. It would be nice if the rifle was interesting as well and had parts that can be upgraded and serviced to help him learn both maintainance and the evolution of accuracy. The rifle will not be used for hunting so weight is not an issue. I would like to stick to lower recoil guns so I can buy cheaper scopes if possible, I am not sure what caliber the scope prices jump at. Thanks in advance Josh Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron "They were not killing each other under Saddam."-Saaed

Go to Bob Whites Shooter's Corner and you will fond more accuracy rifles listed than even the gunlist or other places. Bob is a very standup guy to deal with. Butch

I checked his site, unfortunately it doesnt give any suggestions for chosing a gun. I may check his site when I settle on a gun since a buddy of mine has an ffl. I would stay with a 222 or 223. Components are cheap, no recoil, and can be accurate. Butch

I would look awfully hard at a Savage 12BVS in 243 Win. Very easy on the shoulder, adjustable trigger (down to 2.5lbs) and likely well under 1/2moa with some load work. A decent 4-16X and ready to go for under $1000. Rich DRSS

I would get him a Remington M700 SPS Varmint in 223 Remington. This would make a very good target rifle for the money. This caliber is inherently accurate, very low recoil, and cheap to reload. The trigger on this rifle is easily tuned. good shooting, dxr Happiness is a tight group

Joshua43214, The .223Rem is a vey good starting point. Ammunition is readily available, and a fine cartridge for the new handloader. Either the Savage BVSS or the Rem700V would be fine. Most important would be be sure that the twist rate is 1/9...not the 1/14. I know what you`re thinking,...did he fire six shots, or only five?

Why STP? If you are shooting for accuracy the 52gr. bullets are best in the 223. Butch

He said 100m or possibly more if interest grows. I took "more" to mean a whole bunch...requiring heavier bullets and faster twists. I know what you`re thinking,...did he fire six shots, or only five?

BSA Martini 12/15 for inexpensive, Mark III for their best. There are piles of juniors rimfire target programs around the country, and this might be a good place to start. flaco N.B. Posted in view of the fact that this is the target shooting forum.

Cheap, accurate, low recoil, reloadable. You just described the Model 200 Stevens in 223.
