Always a favorite of mine...

designed at the end of WW2, and entered service as the war was ending it served in Korea, the Cold War and finally Vietnam..

carried more ordinance than a fully loaded B 17...

Don't know Werner Herzog or his movie, sorry.
The person I'm referring to was a Naval Aviator
and was stationed at NAS Lemoore.

I was aware he had escaped from a Viet Cong prison camp. I knew him prior to his capture and only saw him once after his escape.

Dieter (not Deiter) Dengler? And he came from Wildberg in Germany?

Quite possibly true as I am known for getting my ei and ie mixed up on a regular basis. Have not thought of him in over 40+ years. While not a close friend was a good friend and we had sportscars in common. I knew quite a few pilots at the time, in fact lived across the sidewalk from John McCain.......
