When I went through the Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course 31 years ago we had a Lieutenant in the class fron Niger. I think he was almost 50 and had been in the Niger Air Force for over 30 years before becoming a Lt. He claimed that as a young troop he helped pull start C-47 aircraft by looping a rope around the prop with six young guys pulling on it. Seemed far fetched to me but maybe they did it. From the comments section. Had six newfies rope start my Dornier DO-28A one time...at the last minute, spied the last one with the rope wrapped around his hands...woulda pulled the lot into the prop in case of a backfire...but it started like a charm! Gotta be a Canadian to know about Newfies. Grizz · Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. Not to be out done but...When I was flying back in the 60's, we had a twin beech (C Model) on floats that had a bad battery. We occasionally had to prop it with a rope, I was the guinea pig. had to stand on the left wing outboard and place a loop around the prop and pull it through. It would start, and if the guy in the left seat revved it up you had to drop down and hang on for dear life. The good generator was on the left engine so you could then start the right side.
