Harrowing flight B-727 Da Nang - Saigon 1975

105 seats 360 passengers.

So much for weight and balance! This was the trip from hell. I bet these crew members are STILL talking about this trip! I flew for World for a year before United. They showed this video on the first day of a new hire (Dec 1977) and gave us a very detailed narrative. The Capt was Ken Healey, VP of flt ops. To get the airplane into the air with the stairs down, etc., he selected 40 flaps which "popped" the airplane off the ground. Then he rotated, selected flaps 25 and, as he said, prayed and fought to keep it in the air.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Wow! It seems like so long ago.
