Polish Air Force C-130 Has a Major Airframe Stress Event March 3, 2010 This is a very recent terrain-avoidance incident in Afghanistan. The wings deflected roughly 12 feet! Which explains why the armpit panels blew out. Elevators, gear doors and external tank damage was from trees and G's...yes, they were THAT close! C-130's... They are some tough-assed flying dumpsters! Below is the Polish Air Force C-130 in Afghanistan that executed a 4+ G pullup to avoid terrain and survived to fly back to base. Notice the amount of elevator remaining. How fun was that to limp home? Elevators sheared right off...

That the crew survived is testament to not only the greatness of the airplane but to the pilots, as well. A little bit of B-17 genetics in the C-130, perhaps?

With all due respect, is the pilot a hero, or a dumbass? Certainly, it took some "stuff" to get her back home, but why in the hell did he hit trees, and subsequently have to do a 4G pull up in the first place? Gotta love that plane though. She's a beast.

Isn't that the model with the screen door? Oh, forgot, I am thinking of the Polish submarine. I would have loved to flown around Afghanistan in a C130. Instead I got the venerable MI 8. I was more afraid of crashing in that thing that I was getting hit by an IED. **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

I can here the retelling of the incident at the O club now . . . Just after the "There we were . . . They had asked us to drop some supplies to ground type folks that really needed them and the right seater said , , , "Yeah we can get in there, it might get a little tight, but we can do it." Or the other possibility is that some of the true but NEVER written comments included "I was flying along when I realized that . . . I had my head up my . . ." They walked away . . . That is the IMPORTANT part! Don't limit your challenges . . . Challenge your limits

Well stuff happens, a good bit of flying never the less, The C-130 one of Lockheed's best. Came out of experience with the Berlin Air Lift. As For the Poles, They have made a valued contribution every were there Soldiers when. At one time Polish Soldiers, even aided us in our little war with England! They kept the Soviets out of Europe after War I, and made sure the enigma machines they had got to England, The Pole's are a stand up lot. Oh and for those of you old enough to remember Ted Knight, there was a very interesting man.

The Poles fought bravely in the battle of Britain. Their Herc pilots are just as good as anyone else's. It's easy to get distracted while flying, as the late AA pilots flying onto Cali, Colombia a few years ago in their high tech 757 discovered to their momentary horror just as they hit the mountain top. Of course, nobody survived that one.

Trying to explain that to a non professional pilot is a lot like explaining how a digital watch works to a bullfrog. People play MS Flt Simulator and honestly think they have a clue.

That reminded me of this clip. Funny thing is this scene I remembered from when the movie first came out and I was 8 years old or so. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

the Polish fighter pilots serving in the Battle of Britain had a bit of "Motivation" to be agressive. "Will to Combat" often makes up for other shortcomings, but when you have only the skilled and lucky (Both or they'd never made it to Britain) and apply "will to combat" you don't want to be in their sights.... AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame. *We Band of 45-70er's* 35 year Life Member of the NRA NRA Life Member since 1984
