For those that havent seen a pic of it, it is weird. A swing tail 747 that is pregnant. Its been coming into Ted stevens international (anchorage) here in anchorage for a while now. Its carrying fusalage parts over seas (what I was told atleast by one of the flight crew) for teh new 787's. Dont know. Thing is weird but actually cool. http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image4581.html A lesson in irony The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves." Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

Don't know about "cool", but they sure milk those wings for all the lift they can.

I'd like to see a profile shot of that airplane. Remember, they piggyback the shuttle on a 747. I've flown the simulator in that configuration. I'd hate to lose an engine with transcontinental fuel weight.

NASA doesn't fly them non stop from Edwards to Kennedy they make an intermediate stop at one of three intermediate airfields. They simply don't want to take the chance of lifting off with that monkey strapped to the back of the jumbo AND enough fuel to make the entire trip. I'm sure they could care less about the jumbo there are plenty of them around, but that orbiter literally defines the phrase "an expensive piece of cargo". Reminds me of the Pregnant Guppy and Super Guppy aircraft that NASA used for flying rocket parts. One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

Yeah, you're right. I think this last one landed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport. It's a slug, no matter how much fuel it has.

I remember seeing it land with a shuttle in San Antonio, Jan or Feb of 84. I was on the firing range at Lackland AFB when it took off. I am not sure what base it landed/took off from. Lackland doesn't have a runway. It may have been Kelly AFB, which was next door. Awesome sight. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Yeah, it would have been Kelly. Used to go in there a lot years ago flying Logair trips. San Antonio was a great layover.
