Okay question for you pilots.

Why would the aircraft come in in close formation like that? Seems like if the lead plane hits a log or whatever, then both planes are going to crash. Seems like the spray from the lead plane will make visibility poor for trailing plane? Why not keep an interval of a mile or something?
