Certainly not a pilot, wish I were, but have flown as a passenger on many commercial/private planes over the years and always thought the ultimate in a flying machine would be one that could land on water as well as hard surface. Question is are they still being mfg? I spent fair amount of time on small planes in Alaska with floats, but speaking about the planes as the PanAm Clipper version, big or small. Have owned three Boston Whaler boats in my time and always noticed that the bow configuration was similar to those sea planes of yesteryear. If I were "rich and famous" would just live on the thing and think that would be the ultimate luxury. I do enjoy reading the various posts here regarding flying, it is fascinating to me. Oh, to be young again!!

What you want to do is actually pretty simple, just win a lottery and go buy a Martin Mars from that fire fighting outfit in Canada.

Actually, you probably ought to win 2 or 3 lotteries first.....

Beautiful planes either way!

Twin Otter

The De Havilland Twin Otter is the workhorse of island hopping in the places like the Maldives.

Saeed,
Very much appreciate posting the information on the Twin Otter. Noted the range of being some 900miles plus and that seems like quite a bit, but that is a good thing. Again, thanks,

martin

I've always thought the Widgeon would be one to have. Here's one for sale:

I have flown in a float plane a couple of times, but the most fun was flying in a Goose.

I have had the pleasure of flying in a Goose a few times.

I have taken off in one on land and water, and landed in one on land and water.

Pretty cool when the belly of the plane hits the water.

My taste would be for a Goose or a Mallard

Unless I could track down one of the few Fleetwings Seagulls
(You just gotta love a STAINLESS STEEL airplane that floats)

Isn't Jimmy Buffet's "Hemisphere Dancer" a Grumman Goose? Pretty birdy, that.

My daddy told me that it was no more expensive to dream big, but I think MFB wins the prize. Living on a big sea plane or amphib sounds absolutely glorious.
