Several years ago, the local volcano erupted and the lava flow went right through the middle of town. There's a lot of it around.

The DRC is The Land That Time Forgot. Hot wars, refugees, piss-poor central government with little control over the countryside, warlords...anybody who is surviving in that place has his shit together.

It's likely in worse shape than when Henry Morton Stanley traversed it in the 19th century.

Mad Mike and his boys did a lot of hard fighting in that area during the 60's. He has two great books out. Congo Warriors and Congo Mercenary. The former is difficult to find because Mad Mike withdrew it from publication, but I have a copy. Those were the days...
