THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY. It covers America's entry into the Jet Age with the Bell P59A. Note the part is about the installation of a $2 doorbell ringer to the dash of the P59A to provide vibration so the gauges wouldn't stick. http://www.aircraftowner.com/v...tober-1942_1617.html

Went to an airshow of Gliders at Brookley Field ,Mobile Al in about 1944. The special unannounced event was a flight by this historic aircraft. If my childhood memory serves they did a takeoff, flyby and landing and I really didn't know what I was seeing. Brookley was a training base for glider pilots I believe. This had to be prior to the Normandy invasion. The jet didn't impress my Dad but the glider pilots did. I do remember one trick that they did that really impressed Dad. They landed right in front of us and rolled the nose up on a silver dollar to demonstrate their precision landings. The glider ( I believe a Waco) stood straight up on it's nose. Very impressive to a young boy. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS
