I may take the plunge for this. Are there any Internet sources where one can buy used "stuff" eg. flight bags, flight computers, headsets, books etc?
Thanks, Peter.

For value I'd suggest craigslist or ebay. Regarding books, most all aviation books will have a "shelf life" so I'd suggest buying something current, and actually what I'd suggest is asking where you are going to get instruction so you have the same info and texts they use.

I regards to tthe rating, I'd suggest finding a school and doing a program. It is cheaper and faster than the every weekend type of lesson. For schools get a copy of Trade A PLane, usually you can visit a FBO and find an old copy in the pilots lounge somewhere, or just get a subscription but then you start looking at all the neat planes every month.

Thanks, Mark! I have a list of the 'stuff" that is recommended ie. books computers etc. from the flight school so I know what I need, just not sure where to find aviation stuff. I have never heard of "Trade a Plane". I will have to check it out. Lot's of stuff out there for the PPL not so much for the SP.
Peter.

I have looked at two light sport aircraft recently; very impressive. The Flight Design high wing and the Piper Sport.

I may have a pair of headsets if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer but I just bought a headset, an avcomm, via craigslist, locally. I also picked up some books as well. I think I may need a computer though.
Peter.

This can get you started:

Especially for sport pilot, at least learn to use an E6B, they have more functions than you can imagine and they are fun to use, usually faster than an electronic one (except for weight and balance), and never run out of batteries.

It depends on what the definition of the word "is" is.

I'm guessing they were made in the 70's to 90's, but the design has been unchanged for 75 years or so. The metal E6B with the slide is easier to learn how to work the "wind triangle" stuff, but the circular CR computer also does the same thing on the backside of that one. They are both identical for the time/speed/distance side which is what you really use it for 99% of the time, and the CR just plain fits easier in a pocket or a case.

Anyway, back in the pre-electronics days it was occasionally a ford/chevy type of discussion. So I'd say here is an opportunity to get them both and then worst case you can keep the CR in your glove box and use it to figure out how long it takes to drive 425 miles at 72 mph or 12.8 gallons of gas for 513 miles equals what MPG.

Thanks Mark. I just checked the list the flight school gave me. It says CX2 flight computer. is this the same as the CR2? I have not "searched" yet!
Peter.

The CX2 is the usual electronic flight computer, basically a pocket calculator with a bunch of programs. I will say the one thing they excel in is doing weight and balance calculations but other than that I prefer a manual computer.

That said, when in Rome do as the Romans do and use what they recommend but personally I'd try to get both and get proficient in the E6B as well.

Mark, thanks for the tip. I was the winning bidder.
Still looking for a CX2 though.
I might have so much fun with these toys that I don't even need to fly.
Peter.

Thanks Clem! I only just saw your post. I have been looking for "slightly used' stuff as a way of getting into this without breaking the bank.
Peter.

Wow, just checked that and you got a bargain! Now you just need to spend some time playing with them and like I said, for pretty much everything except weight and balance they are great.

I you have trouble figuring them out send me a PM sometime.

Yeah but with shipping it came to about $10. Actually it came without instructions, so I have to find those (on line I hope). They won't help me now because I don't know squat, but later I will need them. I am still bidding on CX2's on EBay. haven't snagged one yet!
Peter.
