Listen to the deep, throaty growl of this engine and try to imagine sitting behind this thing as it pulled you through the air - I wish!

My dad was in the Air Force. He retired as a command pilot (>20,000 hours). Grew up hearing wonderful sounds.

Especially loved the P51 and the B29. Heard a B29 at the Charlotte Airport a couple of years ago and nearly broke an ankle running to find a place I could see it ... what rush!

P51s do even more to me! Just love the Merlin Wink

Sweet! Nothing like the sound of a big piston aircraft engine at throttle, although I am partial to the radials...

I like radial engines too.

That is probably why I think the coolest plane I have ever flown in was a Grumman Goose.

Twin radial seaplane.

In it I have taken off and landed on land and taken off and landed on water.

I was a passanger, not the pilot.

A Super Cub is pretty neat, but that seaplane is really versatile.

Couldn't leave it alone, eh? I knew somebocy would do this so you have forced me to post this, the 'prettiest' airplane that ever flew and the sweetest sound of any engine ever - just ask anybody that ever called in air support and had 'Sandy' come in low, punch out the naplam and all those fifty cal rounds.
Things take on an entirely different meaning - quickly!
Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...7-i4&feature=related and have a look!

And check the stores on this old girl!

That is the aircraft the ARMY should have for certain support rolls.
Upgrade electronics and electrical systems to support some modern weapons systems and give some to the Army.
