I just watched the movie "No Highway in the Sky " with J Stewart, Marlene Dietrich . About fatigue failures in aircraft. I always assumed that it came out after the Comet jet failures and was based on that. I looked it up and found the movie was made in 1951 and the first Comet flight in 1952 !! They should have watched the movie and learned !!

The Lockheed Electra had fatigue problems, as well. A condition known as "whorl mode" caused fatigue to develop rapidly at the fuselage/ wing juncture. The wing came off one over Flushing Bay and killed everybody, naturally. It was a design flaw caused by the angle the #3 engine was installed relative to the wing's span, as I recall. You can look it up. The Electra then got a very bad rap, but has been a tremendously successful airframe as the P3 anti-sub airplane for the Navy.
