Un freakin' believable -- even for Alaska bush pilots!

Jon, I asked a pilot friend about that and he said it was simply a matter of raw power vs. the light weight of the plane. Really something to see!

I was watching a video of the competition several years ago and several of the people interviewed were flying planes built to compete in STOL competition.

No matter, stock or purpose built the pilot still has to have the skills to fly it at that level.

on the side bar there was the 09 may day fly in with some "oops" moments

wonder how many props some of these STOL guys have been through and how many the more inexperienced pilot that was trying a STOL has dinged up

This is a very FUN Competition....AND is the week after Cal Pappas Double Rifle Shoot....and to boot, the Great Alaskan Aviation Gathering....doubles on Saturday, and a super Bush Trade show on Sunday...leisurely drive to Valdez, and some salmon fishing along the way...
What could be more fun??

Cheers,

Some great aviators up there. I flew in Alaska for five seasons. Was an incredible experience! I serviced 25 Inuit villages around the Kotzebue area. Mostly Maules, 206's and Super Cubs...

Oh for the good'ol dayz!
