Here are some great photos a friend sent me. They are from the WWII Iwo Jima campaign in the Pacific that he ran across. Lots of P-51 shots and depiction of how life was during that battle.
Comments from a good old friend who flew the mustang;
"It was a raw experience, very basic airplane".
"Hotter than hell in the cockpit, the noise was deafening".

Thank you for the pix. I was born in '43, and my uncle was badly wounded by a sniper on Okinawa. I can now better understand why he had some problems ater the war. His life did not turn out well at all. No wonder.

It's interesting that not too long ago our esteemed prez billy klinton returned the island to japanese control. Shortly thereafter they closed it to foreigners except for one day a year to allow memorial tours by other countries.
I was named after my Uncle Richard who went island hopping as a BAR packing Marine in WWII.
