Fascinating story. I used to fly up and down that stretch of beach when I was a kid. I lived in Mobile in 1959 and soloed at age 16 on July 4 that year.

Additionally, that museum is the best one I've ever been to, including the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. If you are ever near Pensacola, don't miss it.

They use to test the new P38s out of March AFB in calif. I think it was 3, P38 planes that crashed here locally one in Lake elsinore and 2 in the mountains around here and near Lake Mathews. Met a Gentlemam about 20 years ago and went with him to excavate one of the old crash sites in the mountains, we found some amunition, whats left of a Machine gun, parts of a motor and assorted metal pieces. There was newspaper right up I have somewhere.
