A couple years ago I was in wallyworld and was grabbin some water to brew some beer with and this old gent asked me what I was gonna do with th water as I had a few jugs of it, so we talked a bit and went on about our biz.A few weeks later I was in there again and ran into him again and so we chated a bit more and he mentioned that he was in th AF in WW2 so I asked him what he did and he said that he was with th 8th AF 416/470th Light Bomb group and that they flew A-20s and I said " Havocs" and he looked at me eyes wide open and said "how'd you know that", so begain a friendship. Th 416th was th first to get A-26s in th ETO and are my fav plane of all time, he told me that and I said "yeah, Invaders"-my eye were buggin then, he said "how do did you know that"again. Anyway my friend sent my pics of him over there thought you might want to see this one....or maybe not! you can go too 416th.com and see and read some cool stuff and my friend-Cap. Robert Kehres

Do you ever build models of them? The FW-190 family is a favorite of mine. I just got a 1/48 kit of the 2-seat trainer in the mail.

Eduard makes a very detailed but very complicated A-series. They will release a D-9 in January, and a D-11 and -13 to follow. A Ta-152 is scheduled for later in the year. It will be really interesting to see the V-12 190s. The best one out there; the Trimaster/DML kit is 20 years old. Tamiya made a D-9, but it has problems. There are high hopes that the Eduard D-series will be an improvement over the Trimaster kit, while not being as complicated as their A-series.

The later versions of the aircraft used on the western front in the interception role, yes.

One of the things that bugs me about images of FW190's is the image of one that had crash landed and the wooden propeller had broken.

The fact that the propeller was wood was used an example (in after the war commentary) that our destruction of german industry was working...

when infact the laminated wood propeller was a technological marvel because it greatly reduced rotating mass and allowed abrubt changes in power and thus increased manueverability in the hands of the typically skilled pilots that flew them.

I'd like to know how the Messerschmitt managed to get the cannon barrel to go through the propellor spinner on the Me-109...

The prop hub is mounted to a planetary gear driven by a pinion gear attached to a drive shaft driven off the crankshaft. The gun is mounted between the engine and hub. Lots of WWII era fighters used this arrangement in one form or another. P39 was the most exotic having the shaft run between the pilots legs. Plenty of photos around if you wanna post em.

Willy Messerscmitt ALSO turn the engine UPSIDE DOWN in the 109, so it sat lower in the plane. Oil pan on top, valve covers on bottom. It was a 60-degree V-12, IIRC.

The FW 190 was a great bird.
My favorite was the one Kirt Tank had his hands in, the TA 152.
Possibly the best high altitude fighter of the war. IMHO
