I bought this in Japan many years ago. This is an original Japanese matchlock (tanegashima). These were introduced to Japan in the year 1543 by a Portuguese merchant ship. Japan ended up making their own from the 1600s through around 1850. This was the primary firearm of Japan until the late 1800s when they adopted a cartridge firing Murata rifle in 1880. This is a semi fancy one with what i was told appears to be a family crest on the barrel. I truly wish this one could talk. Lots more pictures available. I'd like to get $2500 for it but am open to offers. This is definitely something you don't see every day. NRA Life Member | ||
