I am looking to get into cowboy action shooting. I need a lever gun in 45 colt or 44-40 to get started. If you have something of a starter rifle, say some type of 1873 or 1892 reproduction. Let me know what you have. Thanks, RC Shoot the largest caliber you can shoot well, and practice, practice, practice.

When I was CB action shooting, I used 38-40 revolvers and rifles. bottle necked, smoother feeding and lighter bullets. 40 caliber.

A man after my own heart - I love my 38-40s, but I have to admit 44-40 is is easier to work with. Guns, dies, brass and bullet selection are all better, there's more data (and factory ammo) available, and then there's that bizarre mis-match between 38-40 chamber and ammo dimensions that is bothersome (to me at least). Anyway, both 38-40 and 44-40 are definite favorites of mine.

No problem at all with 38-40; revolvers are easy to get and I custom make the barrels for the levers. And I used 44-40 brass; it is really close since the 38-40 is really a 40-40, but Winchester marketing thought a 38 caliber would sell better. Yes, just ignore what a factory round looks like compared to a chamber and go with it. It feeds smoother, and fits my criteria that no one else has the same rifle/revolver. I don't want common stuff.
