Looking for an all weather 30-06 for the wife. Needs to have a CRF action would like a 22 or 23 inch barrel with a slimmer contour. Iron sights would be a bonus. Looking for a serious Alaska hunting rifle for her to carry in September. Going to try to stay under $2500, but if the right rifle becomes available I would be willing to pay its value. | ||

You just described my Ruger 77 MK II Stainless Boat Paddle stock with added limbsaver pad, factory sights, NECG peep, Alaska Arms Coffin Box floor plate, and Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 in Alaska Arms QD rings. It's the perfect Alaska do all rifle. I have plans to add a Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40 Green Mil-Dot in AA QD rings to add a bit more versatility to it. Rare as hen's teeth if you can find one. If you can deal with a 24” barrel, the SS model 70 Alaskan would be a good option. You just need to swap out the heavy laminate stock for a light synthetic. The barrel contour is quite thin, and it has open sights. Matt FISH!! First of all, if the gun is for your wife then surely you can get her with the first shot and how the action feeds is irrelevant. But if you do need a follow-up shot (always good to make sure in a case like this), then I'd suggest that you're barking up the wrong tree. I've yet to find a shooter who has personally experienced a failure to feed with a quality rifle which was caused by its push-feed design (this does not include cheap promo plastic-stocked rifles with plastic magazine parts, of course.) Everyone has a story about such a failure, but it is almost always "I know a guy who knows a guy" who was nearly mauled by a charging lepus horribilis (horrible rabbit) when his (insert name of push feed rifle here) jammed. Or they can cite numerous magazine articles, the veracity of which is the stuff of legends. On the other hand, almost everyone who has had a few decades of experience with rifles has had a CRF "Mauser" on him: The extractor refuses to jump over the rim of a cartridge inserted directly in the chamber. This results in a jam which is usually permanent until a cleaning rod can be inserted from the muzzle to push out the cartridge jammed in the chamber. Of course, if the forward face of the extractor of the CRF action is properly beveled then this problem is mostly minimized, but the rims of some ammunition still may present a problem with cartridges not fed directly from the magazine. But in the end, it is your money and your choice. If you feel better about taking out your wife with a CRF rather than some more modern design, then I'm sure you'll be successful, regardless. However, discussing your plans in an open forum may not be wise from a legal point of view. | |||

Agreed. A great choice and they seem to be readily available right now at a good price point. I need one like a hole in the head but have to admit I've been tempted . . .  Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||

I actually ended up with a Bergara. Which of course is not CRF. I just had hopes that someone here had a Mauser or Model 70 all done up and perfect! | |||
