John Rigby 12 Bore Hammer Double Rifle DESCRIPTION: Very nice Rigby 12-bore hammer double rifle from the Golden Era of British double rifles. Features 26" steel barrels with full length broad flat filed rib, engraved in English script "John Rigby & Co Dublin & London", mounted with one fixed express rear sight, three folding leaf express rear sights (marked for 100, 150, 200 yards), and dovetailed bead front sight. A sling eye is mounted to bottom rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 13 bore, and Rigby trademarks. Jones type underlever action with Webley spring-assist (Patent 3022). Action has nicely filed scrolled scalloped fences. Non-rebounding bar locks with serpentine hammers are fitted with front sliding stalking safeties. Lockplates and hammers are engraved with very well cut small shaded open scroll. "John Rigby & Co" is on front of each lockplate. Action is engraved with medium open scroll. Steel trigger guard has S/N at grip. Nicely figured European walnut buttstock with capped pistol grip and engraved steel buttplate. Stock features point pattern checkering with broad mullered borders, drop points, as well as a sling eye on bottom. Matching splinter forend with inset shaped horn tip attaches to bbls with wedge through oval steel escutcheons. Drop at Comb measures approx 1-1/2", Drop at Heel measures approx 2-1/4", LOP measures 14-1/8" from front trigger to buttplate. Weight: approx. 10 lbs. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrels retain most of an old professional re-black. Action is silver gray. Wood retains most of an old finish with a number of minor handling/use marks. Drop points and checkering are good. Bores are excellent; shiny and bright throughout entire length with no pitting. Barrels/Action are tight and on-face. Locks are crisp. Stalking safeties (of limited value on a non-rebounding action anyways) have been disabled. Comes with a few assorted case accessories, most notable being Rigby-marked round ball mould. I have not personally shot this rifle so cannot provide any load data or attest to its accuracy, but prior owner advised that it shot very well with both round ball and conical projectiles. PROVENANCE: Delivered in 1867 to Capt. W. Preston, 14th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry. Partial trades considered. Layaway/Installment Payment Plan is an option. Antique / No FFL Required. Price: REDUCED $2,000 Was $11,950.00 Now $9,950 PM me for photos. Thanks for looking! | ||
