It is too bad someone sporterized this as they are valuable as an original. But they did a nice job, bolt handle has been changed to a butter knife style and the barrel has been cut to 23 1/8inches and iron sites removed. It has been bedded in a thumb hole laminated stock. All the numbers match.it has a tip over side mount scope mount with an older 2x7 weaver I picked this up a couple years ago at a local gun show thinking it would make a cool woods rifle in a full length mannlicher stock. But my eye has wondered to a new project.
These were produced from 1941 to 1944 for the German army and it has the appropriate stamps on the receiver. This one was manufactured in 1942.
I don’t have a picture hosting account if you would like to see photos message me an email or cell number.
Gun in thumb hole stock $525 plus shipping
Barreled action only $400 plus shipping

Just curious; if you sell the barreled action, what will you do with the sporter stock? Big demand for them. I have two 98-40s in my WW2 collection and anyone who butchered one up, even decades ago, was very misguided.

The stock is actually an after market thumb hole varmint style stock. It so chunky that it makes it hard to operate the bolt. Very cool metal work and it is sad that someone tried to make a hunting rifle out of it especially with all the numbers matching. But in an appropriate sporter style stock it still could be a really nice shooter. The open top rear ring is a very unique feature.

Look at them as a Mannlicher bolt with a Mauser Magazine.
And you get a free bump to the top.

I was not aware that the thumbhole stocks were rare these days. In the 80s, I bought 640 board.ft. of birds eye maple blanks from a place in Massachusetts, had it sent to Bishop's in Mo. + had Hulet make most of it into thumbhole stocks. They sold like hotcakes. All gone now, but pieces large enough to use for grip caps + forends.

Remember that the 98-40 uses a two piece stock like the Enfields. So you don't need a long blank for a shorter stock set.
