This is a Mauser 98 in 35 Whelen. It was made by a long-time bow maker who put it together for a friend. The action is a Ramage, made by FN or Steyr for the Columbian military contract. These were made in 30-06, so the conversion to 35 Whelen (same case) was easy with a new barrel. The safety has been converted to a tab safety, and a more modern bolt handle installed. It comes in a camo synthetic stock, with Burris rings, a Simmons 2.5-10 Aetec scope, and a matching camo sling. A cheap way into the great 35 Whelen.

In the 50s, they were converted to 30-06 at the factory that R. Famage is an abbreviation for.
Note the cut in the receiver ring; that is for clip loading of the cal 30 ammo.
Something like Reformado Factory The G is probably Guerra for War. Factory for the reforming (modification) of War materiel.

Jon, with good bullets, a fella really doesn't need anything more than that rifle right there to hunt virtually everything. Looks to me like an excellent value. Someone is going to have a memorable Christmas!

Bill, the first "nice" rifle I ever owned was a Griffin & Howe Model 70 in 35 Whelen. Great cartridge...like a 30-06 for bigger bullets.

It's a super cartridge; in the perfect diameter. Not sure why guys want all those small bones...

The .35 Whelen has such good manners for what it can accomplish. I enjoyed shooting a friend's Nosler in .35 Whelen at gongs out at 300 to 500 yards on a "private range" at the edge of a high-end golf resort near Powell Butte, Oregon, if anyone knows where that is.

Bill, that one goes into the category on "ones I wish I never sold". It was a 1950s M70 in a new (Ottmar?) stock with the G&H side-mounted scope mount. Beautiful rifle. I saw it come up for sale once years ago, but missed it :-(
