Hi all, I've been looking at an Alpine Moufflon hunt in France for some time now, and I thought I would just ask here if anyone has experience of such a hunt. I'm keen to hunt Moufflon but I don;t really want to do it in forestry from a high seat. I'm looking for a free ranging hunt on foot. I've got a hunt in mind, the same as the one 1894 went on but thought I'd see what else is out there. Also, is there a time of year when te cape would be best for a shoulder mount as I understand Moufflon moult. Thanks, FB

No doubt you will get some good info - while - just a thought - take a look at the Mouflon in Croatian isles - along the coast between Senj and Sibenik or even better further down the coast at Peljesac peninsula - great nature, white limestone with blue sea in the background... Hunt is fair chase, conducted by spot and stalk. You will follow your stalker (PH), to a vantage point. From there you will observe game resting or browsing vegetation on the slope. PH will bring you within shooting range of 50 - 200 m. Hunting season for Muflon ram is year round. Rut time is October. Very good time are also Winter months; December to February. In the summer months you may hunt while your family enjoy summer holiday on beach a few minutes away. For a good mount I would look for winter coat so late fall through the winter is preferable.

F-B, As ususal - Mousie is Spot-On.....that's the place. No; haven't hunted it myself but have someone who is well-connected in the area and it is good. Prices aren't outrageous, either. Same applies for Chamois in this area. Cheers, Number 10

Take a look at this: http://www.onf.fr/foret/dossier/chasse/index.htm The ONF is the French Forestry; their hunting territories are very well administrated and their guides are really experienced. A couple of acquaintances hunted the mouflon with them in the recent past and were satisfied. Those are not "high seat" hunts but quite wearing, always in fairly steep land, with shots up to 200-250 meters.

Hi Mouse, That looks like an interesting hunt. I'm assuming they are all free ranging. What sort of trophy fees do you charge for a representative sheep upto a gold medal? Also what are the fees on a Chamois? Rgds, FB

The best mouflons in France can be seen in the Caroux-Espinouse region, but you need to book your hunt two years in advance. http://www.montagne-haut-languedoc.com/montagne-haut-languedoc_mouflon-1.html Easier for you is to go in the north of France in the Somme http://www.marcanterrasearanch.com/contenus/chasse.php Here you can stalk mouflons at the end of the summer.

Bobby You are spot on. The best muflons are got in the Caroux d'espinouse, no discussion. In the Alps, the mouflon is not so big trophywise and sometimes exhausting . The reproach about the Caroux is that mouflon live in dense brush and cannot be easily spotted Your opinion J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent

Hi JB, I hate the maquis as much as you do (specialy the ciste). But most of the time your guide will stalk downhill, which makes the mouflons easier to spot. In the Somme we hunt almost on the beach
