mho,

we call them "fundas" and as B.Martins said they may be found in every gun shop.

they are made in different places, and in my opinion the best ones come from the province of Toledo but they are so popular and made in so many different places that it is difficult to say.

prices would start at 100 euro with the "best in class" costing around 225.

let me know if I can further assist.

Aha, Iberians to the rescue! Thanks Montero and B.Martins. It transpires I have just been educated about a piece of vital Iberian gun culture. You live and you learn.

I looked at the link B. Martins provided, and it is pretty close to what I had in mind. I had the following observations for the "funda" for a scoped rifle I was looking for:
1) I prefer leather to suede (elcaballo's version of a scoped rifle "funda" is shown in suede).
2) I am unsure about the location and the attachment points of the sling. The case I saw in Switzerland had leather attachment points that not only looked rock solid, but also eliminated the need for metal hardware (noisy).
3) The case I saw in Switzerland was actually on the slim side - i.e. it had a hard time accommodating the big scopes we consider standard up here...

So we are definitely on the right track here. It appears the items should be pretty generally available. Any chance you might know anybody that makes or sells these, and possibly has a catalog or something?? Are they also custom made (for my heavier scope)?? It looks like I may have to make a trip to Spain with my rifle some time in the not too distant future...

Mike,

There are a lot of different ones available on the market but, of course, they can be custom made.
I had a twin pair custom made two years ago for my Blasers (shorter than normal), and paid around 350 euros for the pair.
Any artisan will make the fundas according to your specifications.
I will inquire on the gun-shops on my area and see if I can find you some sort of catalog.

Mike,

Those leather gun cases, as you call them, are very popular in Spain and in Portugal. You may say that the leather bolsa or funda is the only rifle-carrying device we use when in montaria.
There are two major types of fundas: a slim one for carrying the un-scoped rifle and a larger one that allows for carrying the rifle with the mounted scope.
The slim ones can also be found in strapped pairs.

In Portugal a few artisans make them and every gun shop has them for sale.

In Spain there are a lot of artisans making them, and also some big industrial manufacturers. Can be found in gun shops and even in large commercial stores (like El Corte Ingles).

Try this link:

http://www.elcaballo.com/catalogo/index_2.html

and look under Collection - Gun Slips

Mike,
As B.Martins and Montero already explained we use that kind of rifle sleeve a lot here.
You might want to check this link, Spanish on line shop, that sells this articles.
Fundas para rifles
Another source you might find useful are the catalogues from Kettner - France and Frankonia - Germany.
There is a factory of leather goods next to my parents house, that in the past have made me some "custom" orders, if you know what you want I can check with them the next time I go to visit my parents.

Cheers

Thanks a bunch guys. I sure get to visit some interesting websites through this quest of mine.... N. Rodrigues' website first turned up a bunch of golf equipment (I don't know a lot of Spanish, but "putters" and "wedges" sounded very suspicious... ). Anyway, in the end, using my "extensive" knowledge of the Spanish language (NOT - I cheated and simply started klicking on various links), I actually found some "fundas". Wow, so this thing works after all...

Yeah, perhaps the opportunity to specify exactly what I want might not be a bad deal. A shorter case accommodating a larger scope would be just the ticket.

Looking forward to more information, and interesting websites

Mike,

Heres the link to the company I referred to on my previous post, Equicaa - Fundas
When you find the page click " Caa Grossa" = Big game
and then "Bolsas p/ Carabinas" = Rifle Slips
They say that they can make special order items - you specify the total length, filling ( foam or synthetic sheep) and colour of the leather. The price is based on the selected options.
Take a look at the web site and let me know if you want me to check anything with them.

Cheers,

N. Rodrigues

Yes, this is a Portuguese company, they are not an exclusive custom maker, bur Ive asked them for some changes on a standard model and they were happy to make it.
You could either try to contact them by e-mail equica-a@clix.pt ,if you have any difficulty you can send me your message and I will translate it to Portuguese, and the same for their answer.

Cheers,

N. Rodrigues

Aha, this looks interesting. Is this a Portugese company??

I had more or less decided it was going to be difficult to get somethwing via mail-order/the Web, because I did not see exactly what I wanted. In addition, it looked like I might need some modifications (shorter gun, larger scope, different sling attachment). So I was starting to believe I had to make a trip to Spain (Portugal), and see what was possible. But for that, I will need some addresses of where to start looking for custom makers. This (Portugese?) shop could be an option, they certainly seem to have multiple models, and the option to have stuff custom made sounds just right.

If any of you Iberians know where to start looking for custom makers, I'd be more than happy for any hints...

Thanks a lot for all your help, past and future
