Have hunted hard for a few days now. 1 buck taken cleanly with one 165 grain Hornady Interbond at 150 yards from highseat. Not many roedeers in this part of Norway. This buck + two does is the only roedeer sighted. Shot 2 foxes that came when calling. Have had some beautiful days out, but now I`m tired. Start hunting 4-5 am, hunt until 10-11am. Then out again 4-5pm to 10pm.. Everyday.. ZZzzzz.. Smiler
Some pictures. Hope you enjoy them!

Nice roebuck! What equipment did you use? That's a HIGH seat for sure and the scenery is beautiful. Do you have many foxes in Norway? Here in Wyoming the coyotes make short work of them if they can catch them.

Be proud of each and every game animal you kill - big, small or no antlers!

Waidmannsheil on a very nice roebuck! I agree, that highseat is indeed very high! I suppose you don't use it in high winds? Wink

Do you have many clear cuts like that? If yes, then that should be perfect habitat for roe deer.

I have been in Norway on holiday quite a few times. But only in the very south, near Mandal on a small island called "Hille". I have experienced my best fishing there!

Thanks for sharing!

Anders,

Nice Buck and a couple od Foxes as a bonus, too!

Those long-g-g-g Norwegian days are probably pretty exhausting if you are trying to keep up with dawn to dusk (is there any?) hunting.

I got two foxes as well the opening morning! The roe buck got the better of me this first morning. Next morning I put the sneak on him, spottet him from a couple of hundred of yards, and called him in using a straw. Believe me, he looked MUCH bigger in the scope...!big sized body, but thin antlers. Oh well, exiting hunt anyway

Forgot to mention it, a Rem LVSF in 22-250, Siezz Conquest 3.5-10x44 reticle german #4, 55 grains TBBC bullet, 38 grains of Vith N-150. The nice thing about hunting with a silencer is that I can hear the impact. This sounded like a loud whhoooooommpf (he he)

Nice bucks guys!

I was out on Fallowbucks ground over the weekend and saw what must have been a medal class roebuck while in the highseat on the Sunday morning.

We were out after Fallow prickets and as FB does not have many roe on the ground, the buck was allowed to walk...I must admit I tried to talk FB into taking it, but his restraint was admirable! Big Grin

The buck worked his way around my highseat and was only 40 yards or so away..I tried to take some pics but as my camera only has a x3 optical zoom they were not very good Frowner

Earlier in the weekend we did take a fox each, although after the shots, neither were "photogenic" enough to warrent a picture here on AR! Wink Big Grin

Regards,

Pete

WyoHunter,
The rifle is a Schultz & Larsen M97DL .30-06Sprg. with 3-12x42 S&B. Bullet is Hornady Interbond 165.
It seems to be a lot of foxes. For the last few years the population has expanded, in both numbers and area they inhabit. Many years back the rabies killed a lot of them, but they are definetly back. There are not so many people doing tradional fox hunting anymore either.
The red fox have also spread up into the mountains, causing big problems for the already endangered artic fox. And in some areas they can kill quite a lot of roedeer calfes. I do not want to get rid of the red foxes, but it`s important for me to hunt different species. I feel that is good management too.

Elwood,
we have quite a few clear cuts, and for me they are the perfect place for roe deer. Much of the forrest sorrounding them have grown to thick to hunt in. Forest management have changed I guess. It`s not economic anymore to cut more carefully, leaving trees behind. So most is clearcuts. But it`s great roe deer habitat for sure (raspberry and other goodies). That and grass fields are my best bet when hunting new areas. It attracts roe in mornings/evenings and you can glass a big area. Keep the patience up for me. In the thick forest you`ll might see ten, twenty or up to fifty yards.. Then you start thinking.. What`s actually the chance of a roe buck passing through here.. Smiler But those bucks are even more fun to have success with.
The areas you have visited near Mandal probably has much better roe populations. My area is appr. 300km north.

Gerry,
In my parts there are dark from appr. 10 pm to 5 am.. But it`s exhausting anyway.. Smiler

Justanothernorwegian,
Congrats on your buck! I think it`s a nice one.. There was an article in the latest edition of "Jakt".. Did you write that one? Much of the same equipment.. Just read it a couple of hours ago, and your post got me thinking.. Smiler

Pete,
I really admire his perrsistance (or foolishness)... Big Grin Just kiddin`.. It might be a good thing in the long run.. One advice. Wait until he`s gone, sneak back up. The buck will proably reappear. Smiler
Notice how I hold the foxes. They were photogenic on one side only.. Smiler

The plateau on the highseat is about 4,5 meters up in the air. It`s actually quite sturdy. I did fix it up a bit this year. Last year one of the "legs" was a tree about 20 meters high. But when this tree moved I did too. When removing the top, and supporting a bit it`s great.

Thanks for comments anyone! Hope more people can hang on to this post and fill in some pics of their buck hunts. It`s one of my favourite hunts! Smiler

Hi Anders. Yes, I did write the article in the last edition of the mag "Jakt", about breaking in my son as a hunter. Glad that you notised! Last years buck was a better one, he is hanging in as a shoulder mount in the room of my my boy now.
Pete, we talked briefly last year about the possibility for me coming to hunt with you. Are there still openings? I might go to Montana to hunt Elk with a friend of mine who is living there in october, do not know if it is dooable yet. Would you care to join if this one is happening?

To clarify,

The main reason I turned down that buck last week was because my partner in the shoot would kill me if I shot the best and probably one of only three Roe we have on the ground!!

Last year I shot a young buck that had "a bad leg..." (Another story...) and he didn't want to talk to me for two weeks, and wouldn't eat any att he BBQ!!

I'm going out this weekend to look for a nice head at a freinds who has many trophy class bucks on his land. If one turns up I'll post the piccies.

Pete,

Do you mean to say that you still have that camera? I thought you would have got a new one by the time you got through Birmingham!!!

JAN,

My freind takes stalkers out to hunt Fallow near us. there is also the chance of some Muntjac on one area. He is quite cheap and good company, and can arrange some B+B for you if you want it. Pete is coming down in November again to shoot bucks and Does so perhaps we could organise a weekend with some hunting together?

Spk Soon,

Yes, I will keep on writing. Hope to be able to deduct travel expences from hunts abroad... My real an shorter name is no secret, but it has unpleasant connotations in English! My first name is Bent. Yes, it is a name, not a persuasion... Oh, and btrw, I live quite close to Hille near Mandal. I have been there several times, caught some repsectable sea-trout there:-)

I am still gutted those pictures never came out!

I spent a couple of days researching digital cameras trying to find one with the features I want and have ordered a Canon S1 with a x10 zoom lens and Image Stabilisation...It also has the facility to take a 1.6 tele-convertor giving it the equivalent of something like a 500mm lens in 35mm term! There are other "better" and higher specified cameras on the market, but only the S1 had the right combination of features I was looking for...

Pete
